I spent a few years back then playing with a cartooning style where heads had only eyes (no brows), mouth, and hair... because I was fascinated by how expressive, and how finely tuned, such faces could be made using only such minimalistic means. I knew I was really on to something when I was able to draw a fairly convincing Tony Bennett without a nose!
2) I frequently discuss jazz and wanted an icon to represent it. I've always found this particular image powerfully iconic, and The Mighty Scott Hamilton is one of my major all-time faves.
3) I also frequently discuss rock and wanted an icon to represent it. I've always loved this cover, and The Charlatans are long-time faves of mine -- never a week goes by that I don't listen to them [in fact, they were already playing when I began this reply].
