Theme mix consultations wanted
Jan. 1st, 2004 07:01 pmSo anyway.
About 12 years ago, in my usual fit of tapemaking, I had a giggle of an idea: a BDSM-themed mix tape. It was a rather half-baked giggle truth be told, since at the time I only had about four titles to use, but I've kept it in the back of my head ever since, and mentally add to the list when something suitable pops up. Honestly, though, I don't know why it didn't dawn on me until recently that I'm sharing bandwidth with a bunch of nifty folks who might be able to help.
So here's what I've got so far: [NOTE: Items marked with an asterisk are songs that would fit perfectly, but which I don't currently own.]
"Backlash Love Affair," Richard Thompson
"Cut," Miranda Sex Garden
"Do What You Want to Do," Lords of Acid
"A Fairytale About Slavery," Miranda Sex Garden
"Happiness in Slavery," Nine Inch Nails *
"Hunting Girl," Jethro Tull
"Master and Servant," Depeche Mode *
"Karen at Night," Jill Sobule *
"O Bondage, Up Yours," X-Ray Specs *
"The Wheel," Miranda Sex Garden
EDIT: Damn, I forgot "Peek-a-Boo" by Siouxsie and the Banshees...
(The Miranda Sex Garden thing is a theme album, in case you were wondering.)
I know I'm missing some. Any other suggestions? Anyone?

Not sure it fits... I think there is another NIN one that would be good... and prolly Marilyn (sp?) Manson would have something...

Date: 2004-01-01 04:54 pm (UTC)you let me violate you, you let me desecrate you
you let me penetrate you, you let me complicate you
help me I broke apart my insides, help me I’ve got no soul to sell
help me the only thing that works for me, help me get away from myself
I want to fuck you like an animal
I want to feel you from the inside
I want to fuck you like an animal
my whole existence is flawed
you get me closer to god
you can have my isolation, you can have the hate that it brings
you can have my absence of faith, you can have my everything
help me tear down my reason, help me its' your sex I can smell
help me you make me perfect, help me become somebody else
I want to fuck you like an animal
I want to feel you from the inside
I want to fuck you like an animal
my whole existence is flawed
you get me closer to god
through every forest, above the trees
within my stomach, scraped off my knees
I drink the honey inside your hive
you are the reason I stay alive

Date: 2004-01-01 06:37 pm (UTC)Artificial Joy Club's Sick and Beautiful might work, as might the Pet Shop Boys I Wouldn't Normally Do This Kind of Thing. Orgy's Fetisha. Adam Ant's Whip in my Valise. Berlin's Torture. Beck's New Pollution? Disturbed's Violence Fetish. Static-X's Push It. Nervous Xians by My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult.
Be sure to check the lyrics to decide for yourself. Some of these are open to interpretation, and can I have a copy? Please? I'll e-mail any of these songs you'd like...

Date: 2004-01-01 08:21 pm (UTC)You made me your servant
Your submissive slave of love
All dressed up in leather
Anxiously waiting in cuffs
Come on break me
I must worship at your feet
I want you to take me
In our dungeon we will meet
It's a lusty crime
But it feels divine
Beat me one more time
Nasty shivers run down my spine
Make me crawl on the floor - break me
Make me scream for more - take me
You rule. I adore - use me
Use me, abuse me
Make me sing with pain - break me
Make me go insane - take me
Make me shout your name - use me
Use me, abuse me
You're my master
I'm submitting all of me
Blindfolded and naked
In my bondage I'm set free
Loving as you bind me
Waiting patiently
Praying that you'll take me
Into pain and ecstasy
It's a lusty crime
But it feels divine
Beat me one more time
Nasty shivers run down my spine
Make me crawl on the floor - break me
Make me scream for more - take me
You rule. I adore - use me
Use me, abuse me
Make me sing with pain - break me
Make me go insane - take me
Make me shout your name - use me
Use me, abuse me

I'm not sure if Exciter has anything good or not; I'll try and listen to it again today.

Date: 2004-01-02 05:46 pm (UTC)Well yes.
First song that came to mind for me.
Others; Number One Crush, by Garbage. Not too bondagey, but very intense. I will think of others, since I have the same mix tape in my mind.
Sex Type Thing, by Stone Temple Pilots.

Date: 2004-01-02 05:53 pm (UTC)I thought of the "Closer" video, too, but it seemed to me that the video had considerably more of a BDSM tie-in than the lyrics did. On second look, though, I may have been wrong on that count. (Have you seen the uncensored version, by the by?)

The web site is www.panix.com/ followed by a tilde ~ and my last name. (Note how I cleverly avoid having spammers and spiders harvest it.)
Gotta second that recommendation for "Don't Ask" -- it's really clever.
Re: music pusher
Date: 2004-01-03 05:47 am (UTC)I've gone ahead and downloaded the tracks, but I'm realizing that there's a bit of a problem: I downloaded them to my Mac, and I don't have a CD burner. And there's some question as to how I'll get them to the PC downstairs...oy... (I apologize in advance if I end up begging you to put them up again another day.)

Well I do have my preferences here. But I'm accepting applications.

Date: 2004-01-04 06:39 am (UTC)As always, my problem with the censorship of a music video is that - when the video is done very well - it will show images linked with sound that originate in a life and style that is completely foreign from your own. To chop up a video, removing scenes, solos, the bits you think are offensive, can be incredibly stupid.
Not only does it break up the message of the video, making it impossible to understand, it also disurbs the completion of the full work. Ergo, it's not unlike a Calder mobile without its heavy metal fins. Pointless! Silly!
If the censors have a list of images they don't want to see in videos, in the process of removing those images, they run a very good chance of making a video that raises question and invites further study into that which they hoped to avoid - a gratitous flash-fest of strange and disurbing sights.
The whole point of a video should be to retain its whole, so that we /understand/ and can debate what we see.
Arguing that the majority of people don't think about what they see is a valid point. However, those images which are taken out may be the images that MAKE the lowest common denominator think.
I apologize.
I've started to rant.
I'll stop now.
....one last point. ~turns brilliantly red~
If there are people who want to break the link between consensual sex and consensual violence, by editing out controversial images from all kinds of media, it's never going to work. People will find out about the lifestyle, and it's better all around to look into the life and debate all its implications before we allll leap in and make dangerous mistakes.
Come on, world.
Give us some credit.
.....and now I am done.

Date: 2004-01-04 07:51 am (UTC)I'm in full agreement with you: cesorship of music video is downright silly. Sometimes, though, it seems that folks of us, i.e. those who view MV as a valid cinematic art form, are in the minority. To a large chunk of the world, they're nothing but commercials, a tool to sell a product. And while that may be the reason they exist in the first place, it's their artistry that validates them.
In the case of the "Closer" video, at least the editing was done under Mark Romanek's auspices, so it was better than it might have been otherwise. And they also made no bones about the fact that this was edited from the original, with all the "Scene Missing" placards. As for the edits themselves, there are some that I sinply don't understand. Obscuring the full frontal nudity I can understand, even though I disagree with it. But yes, close-cropping the black-gloves-and-blindfold shot seems downright prudish, and the crucified monkey is disturbing, but no more so than the fish at the end of Faith No More's "Epic," which stayed in. (It's hardly the worst edit I've ever seen, though: when MTV aired Björk's "Pagan Poetry," after blacking out her bare breasts and the pearls being sewn onto her skin, there was nothing left.)
The one problem is that when the cable networks don't like the content, the two options are (a) edit, or (b) don't show it at all. The natural inclination is to say that not having nationwide exposure is preferable to hacking up a work of art, and I agree with that; "Closer" (as well as "Jeremy," "Smack My Bitch Up," et al) is far better in its pristine form. But on the other hand, that would mean no one would get to see any of it. Trent Reznor himself has said that, although he didn't like the fact that it got chopped, MTV showed a lot of guts in putting "Closer" into heavy rotation, even in its edited form. So, win some, lose some.
Clearly what we need are more ways for people to view music video on demand, as directors intended, not only for the sake of fighting censorship, but also to counter the programming executives of the world who think we really need to see that Hillary Duff video one more damn time.
(Oh, and re your "one more thing": Have you read Cecilia Tan's The Velderet?)
Missing Songs...
Date: 2004-01-04 07:59 am (UTC)(no subject)
Date: 2004-01-04 09:40 am (UTC)I didn't realize that they censored Jeremy. I was the first person of all my friends to see the Jeremy video. I was sick as a dog in a hotel room, and was trying to watch MTV even though I found it too... in my face. People screaming for my attention when they HAD my attention, and then the screaming was reduced to ecstatic yelling, and they announced they were going to premier a new video by a new group, called Jeremy, and here you go folks.
It played.
My mouth hung open through the whole showing. Not because I was sick either. I remember thinking "That was the most amazing video I have ever seen, these guys are going to be so RICH."
I was so excited, I told my parents when they came to pick me up from the hotel room. I was so excited, they thought I was delirious. I think Jeremy was probably the most amazing video for instant impact on the music industry.
Tied for second in my repetoire of adored videos; Radiohead's Street Spirit and NIN's Perfect Drug.
Ahhhhhh, Perfect Drug, you are such high art. ~sighs~ That's another Mark Romanek video, actually.

Date: 2004-01-04 11:33 am (UTC)"Jeremy" was censored only in two places, and they're relatively brief but significant. The first one occurs in the shot of the class reciting the pledge of allegiance. If you watch closely at the edited version, theres a very quick cut of the children standing at their desks, delivering the "Heil Hitler" sign. In the original version version, though, that shot lasts for several seconds, and we can see the shirtless Jeremy looking somewhat maniacal in the back of the room. (To make up the time, Mark Pellington added the shot of Jeremy wrapped int he American flag, which I don't think even appears at all in the unedited version.)
The second one's the big one: in the MTV version, we see fuzzy TV footage at the very end that leaves a bit of a question as to what it was exactly that Jeremy did. In the uncut clip, there's no question at all: we see him stand before the class, raise a gun, and put the barrel in his mouth, only cutting away a split second before the trigger is pulled. Hugely, hugely unsettling.
Oh, and yes, I do recommend The Velderet. It's about a technologically advanced, sexually open society that is so egalitarian and fair that even descriptions and images of "inequality" are forbidden, and the development of a BDSM underground within that world. Very good reading; Cecilia Tan had a good hand with language and storytelling.

Date: 2004-01-04 09:38 pm (UTC)Half my family is Canadian, and I've watched a lot of Canadian television with them. I'm was struck that Nelly did a song about Air Walk Nikes or something, and it cannot be played in Canada because it's balatant advertising. However, Pass the Cuorvosier by Busta Rhymes is fine there. Furthermore, their videos are somewhat less censored for content. For example, I have seen unbelievable French Canadian videos with everything up to and including sex which NO one would play in the States.
In fact, just for sheer fun, go look for Astounded by Bran Van 3000. Now there's a song to kiss to. ~feels naughty~
