Plans today involved taking the shuttle to Alewife Station, the Red line down to South Station, and the commuter rail back to Worcester, but I'm looking at the MBTA website and seeing that everything is running on a limited schedule today due to snow. So, in an effort to head off future headaches, is there anyone local who's willing and able to take me from Lexington (right near the junction of I-95 and Route 2) to Worcester this afternoon? I will hand you the money I'd planned on spending on train tickets in cash and/or negotiate something.

A quick shout into the LJ air in search of a couple of folks to fill proverbial shoes of various sizes:

1) Anyone in Boston and surrounding environs looking for part-time work? [livejournal.com profile] rain_herself is about to leave her position with Mass Housing to start her new doctoral program, and the candidates to replace her have been rather underwhelming. To quote her on the topic, "It's 15/hour, they need pretty strong Excel & Word, event coordinating, good at anticipating needs, organized. Experience with kids and/or school would be good, too. They'll have to be willing to go through an agency as well, probably." Any takers, please drop a line with either me or [livejournal.com profile] rain_herself.

2) [livejournal.com profile] cluegirl and I are nearly done with the recording portion of Pretty in Scarlet, the first Murder Ballads CD. (More on that in an upcoming post.) After that we'll be mixing, and after that we'll need to find someone who can master it for us. We're looking for someone who is inexpensive, as we're still a small operation at this point; we can work long distance if need be through the magic of DropBox and Skype, but bonus points for folks living somewhere along the Massachusetts-to-upstate-New-York ley line. Again, if you know somebody, or indeed are somebody, please drop a line with either me or [livejournal.com profile] cluegirl.

Thanks muchly!

It's Friday night, and everybody knows that nobody reads LJ over the weekend, so naturally I'm here to incite the nobody that everybody knows in heated debate. So for those locals past, present, and future amongst you, address the following question that has been under discussion today:

Best burger in the Boston area. Go.

I have a place to live in the greater Boston metropolitan area! Oh, land of sweets and joy and joyness! It's a gorgeous place in a friendly part of Malden, big room, rockin' kitchen, fantastic roommates of similar interests and disposition.... Man, it really is more than I could have reasonably hoped for. I met [livejournal.com profile] jasra and [livejournal.com profile] majes on Saturday, and they fed me dinner and showed me around and told me about their gaming habits and their love of cooking and their quarterly get-togethers, and then they took me to the movies and invited me to crash at their place for the night, and friends, let me tell you that I slept the sleep of the blessed and the unrepentant wicked that night, so delighted with what has befallen. So much thanks to everyone who helped make this happen, for you are legion!

So question mark #1 is down, and question mark #2 is on its way to toppling as well, as [livejournal.com profile] fiddle_dragon and [livejournal.com profile] jasra have conspired to get my resumé into the right hands at their company, and I just got a call today from a place in...Newton, was it?...regarding a position I'd applied to there. Recrossing fingers and wishing from the happy place for all the necessary ducks to align accordingly.

There's so much else going on, too, that I don't even know which blinking signpost to start from. Some is wonderful, some is not wonderful, some is merely big and complicated. More posts to follow with the details as they become warranted (although the septic system backing up into the tub probably won't merit the write-up); for now, though, I embrace this bit of happiness and contentment, and wish everyone well. Good night, all.

I have mentioned my job search in passing, and my need for help in same, but I haven't gone into much detail yet about what I'm looking for and what I can offer. The following is a condensed and somewhat casual write-up of what I need, but it should be enough to give an idea of what I'm going for. If you know of an opening or an employer who'd be willing to speak to me, or better yet have some pull or authority in the hiring process, I would be eternally grateful for your time and assistance:

Where: Boston or surrounding environs, especially Cambridge/Somerville/Malden/Watertown/ish

When: As soon as is manageable. Early June would be magnificent, but I'm open to anything at this point.

What I'm looking for: A full-time position in either an office or customer service environment would be preferred. Dream job is something in writing or the editorial field; other good matches would be clerical work, data entry or a call center position, all of which are solidly represented in my background. I don't have much tech experience, but I'm a quick study for positions that don't require a degree in the field. In general, though, I'm not about to be particular, and would be interested to hear about anything that might be available. In short, if it's out there, let me know.

Experience (heavily abridged): My current position is as a data entry clerk and clerical generalist for C&S Wholesalers, a position that started as a three-week contract position but has stretched to over nine months due to my indispensability. Prior experience: 12 years as a call completions operator (i.e. call center person) with Verizon; 2 years as assistant manager for Harold's, a retail clothing outlet; darkroom and digital design for the Freeman's Journal; design and editorial work for Coal Magazine (volunteer); freelance crossword construction and article writing for Games Magazine and the New York Times.

Skills: Typing (65 wpm), 10-key entry (wicked fast), both Mac and Windows OS, MS Office, excellent customer service skills, proofreading and editing for content

Education: Bachelor's in English from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

I can email you a copy of my current resumé, references and and any other info you think would be helpful upon request. Thanks so much for taking the time to look this over, and please drop me a line with any leads that might come along!

My father, my stepmother and my stepbrother are all flying into Boston tomorrow for a week's visit. It's the first drop-in I've had from the Chicago relatives, and I've been peppered for suggestions of "things to do." I've already given them the obvious stuff like the Freedom Trail and the aquarium and Harvard Square, they've already made noises about going to Cape Cod at some point, there'll be some hanging-out time with the grandkids, and I just found out about this street market thing at Union Square on Saturday night. That's an excellent start, but I'd like to have some more non-über-touristy things up my sleeve for those in-between times. Any ideas?

Our Google calendar for this weekend includes the item "Find water and get in it," shorthand for our desire to go swimming, gol-dangit. The challenging part of this is the "find water" portion—do Bostonites have any suggestions of someplace a Watertown denizen might go swimming? (Not interested in going all the way down to the Cape, incidentally, especially on Fourth of July weekend.)

Three years ago, I planned a funky day-long scavenger hunt for [livejournal.com profile] shadesong's birthday weekend extravaganza, but it fell through on account of miserable weather, general tiredness and other factors. I'm realizing that now that I'm in a town that, y'know, doesn't actively suck, I can actually do this thing any time I want.

So! Y'all in the Boston area! If I were to plan a scavenger hunt for some weekend when the weather gets a tad warmer (and with the knowledge that there's already an annual hunt in the area), would you be willing to participate? Also, as a scavenger hunt is no bleeding fun without Valuable Prizes, do you have something that you'd be willing to donate in that regard? (The hunt will involve teams of three or four, so Prizes will need to be at least in triplicate.)
