I can hear you all waiting with bated breath, so I shall keep you in suspense no longer:
The results of the 2004 Greatest Movies of All Time Survey
Many, many thanks to those who voted; I'm aware of how difficult a task compiling a top-10-of-anything list can be, and I greatly appreciate your effort. In all, I received 33 lists, enough to assemble a top 50. (Well, okay, top 55, to round out all the films that received multiple votes.) To calculate the winners, I first sorted movies by total number of votes received. From there, ties were broken by assigning points according to where on their respective lists the votes fell: a film that was listed as someone's #1 greatest movie received 10 points, a #2 slot was worth 9 points, and so on down to 1 point for a movie in 10th place. For lists that were presented as "not in any particular order," each film received 5.5 points. (So, for example, Psycho and Rear Window each received two votes, but Psycho appeared higher on its voters' lists, so it ranks higher in the standings.) Any further ties after that were preserved in the final standings—if two items share the same number on the list below, they are tied at that position.
In the end, I bowed to public pressure to allow the three Lord of the Rings movies (Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, and Return of the King) to be included as a single title, as all three were filmed simultaneously and intended as a cohesive work. I had one list that included "The Indiana Jones trilogy" as a single item; in the end, as the three films were filmed separately, I could not allow them to be lumped together. It should be noted, though, that if this entry had been counted as a vote for Raiders of the Lost Ark, that film would have jumped to #3 on the overall list; similarly, if it have been counted as a vote for Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, that film would have to be added as a tie for the #30 spot.
So without further ado, I give you the list:
