The rumors are true: yesterday was Nik's 2nd B-day. (Woohoo! You go, boy! Get on with your bad self!) He was spoiled utterly rotten, of course, much to the dismay of Abbey, who doesn't deal well with watching others get presents and not her. Nik, however, ended up with a big ol' truck he could sit in, and videos, and books, and an Old MacDonald singing-'n'-rolling toy, all of which he ignored in favor of the $2.95 Blues Clues Handy-Dandy Notebook with matching crayon. A man of very simple tastes. I had to work, sadly, but I went in late enough to watch him open presents, and got home early enough to indulge in the pizza and birthday cake. I feel so old... To preserve the balance in the Child Indulgence Scale, Abbey spent the previous night with her Aunt Marci, which meant that she came home with lots of new toys, and neither of them got much sleep. Welcome to our world, Aunt Marci. We love ya for it.

In other news, I actually wrote four whole pages on the screenplay the other day. Man, I am on a veritable roll. I've actually done more creative writing in the past month or two than I had in the previous year and a half combined, between Bold Willie Taylor and a short story I'd been working on previously before my brain got snatched away by this new project. I can't do much until the script's done, except for shake my head and wonder how the hell I'm gonna get this done before winter hits (I'm starting to fear that the answer is, I ain't). The one thing I am starting to do is to canvas my friends and see who still wants in, and (more to the point) who's gonna be up to playing the part of Sarah, the lead, who's going to be in nearly every scene, and who has all the big emotional brouhahas. So far, The only ones who are considering Sarah are Colleen, Marci (coworker, not sis-in-law), Trey and Smitty (Jen Smith), which still means I have to turn three good friends down. The casting process is gonna suck. Sean Crete, Dana, Mike Benway, and Trey's mom (yes!) all have put in a bid for on- and off-camera time, too, and Jim Stowhas is all psyched to do the music and help with the sound recording, thank God. Now if I can keep my sorry ass in gear, we might actually get somewhere.

Oh, and Kristi and I saw Moulin Rouge last night. Very interesting. Very different. Very, very good. But, ahem, that ending has got to go. Yes, I know, you telegraphed it from the get-go, but c'mon, Baz, you broke every other rule in the book; why not that one?
