On Tuesday, quite frankly, I felt like Hell. It was one of those non-specific, asymptomatic Hells, the ones where you try to figure out how to tell your boss that, no, you're not coughing, sneezing, vomiting, spiking a temperature, oozing mysterious fluids or losing any major body parts, but really-honest-and-for-true you're too sick to work. Basically, I ached (which could have just been stored tension) and I felt wiped out and dizzy (which could have just been the result of one late-night phone chat too many). I went to work, toughed it out, and went straight to bed.

On Wednesday, I woke up still achy, still tired, and now with a splotchy rash that covered my entire torso. Work, my eye—it's time for the doctor.

Luckily I got the cool doc at the walk-in center, the one I'd request anyway if I'd had the time. She sauntered in, asked what I was reading ("The Unbearable Lightness of Being? The movie was awesome!"), got my butcher's bill of symptoms, and immediately reached for the ultra-long cotton swab for a little game of Let's Jab at Adam's Gag Reflex. After leaving for a few minutes, she returned with a prescription for penicillin and the comment, "Yep, you've got strep. And if I may add: again." Apparently I'd been suffering from a strep throat without the throat part. Marvy.

So now I'm feeling quite a bit better, what with my regimen of moose pills and a day or two of rest. I've also been told to go get a full checkup, because it seems that I'm a strep carrier, and we need to determine (pardon me whilst I dust off my italics) if I need my tonsils out. I've never been hospitalized for anything in my 33 years, and frankly, I had no problem with the idea of continuing that avoidance streak indefinitely. We'll see.

Oh, and the interesting thing? The rash wasn't a strep rash—it was hives, resulting from stress. At the moment, I'm staring down the barrel of about a half-dozen life-changes, paradigm shifts and weighty conversations all at once. Kristi's arriving by plane today to see the wee ones, and we'll be discussing much of this over the next few days. Please wish me luck, all; I'll fill you all in once things are ball-peened into place a bit better.

*exhale* Off to chase the boy-child some more...
