I got out of the car at 8 a.m., accidentally leaving a CD slim-line jewel box on the front seat. By noon, it had melted. Ye gods, do I hate summer.

Today was a Chase the Boy Child Day (Girl Child is in Massachusetts for the week for a camping thing), which meant a bunch of good father-son bonding activities, like Lego's and Spongebob Squarepants reruns. Yes, it was a good day. Highlight was when we popped over to my apartment briefly, and we both wheezes and groaned our way up the four flights of non-air-conditioned stairs. As we staggered down the hall to the apartment, Nik slumped against the wall, flopped onto the floor, and whimpered, "Dad, you're on your own." Cue gigglefits from Dad.

Oh, and since Nik's birthday is Friday, and it has been hinted that mix CDs are very welcome this year, I tried skimming through some discs in the car to guage what songs he cottons to these days. The ones he pegged as being exceptionally good:
* "Coconut," Harry Nilsson
* "Sing Along," Blue Man Group featuring Dave Matthews
* "Rocky Road to Dublin," Dropkick Murphys
* "Nancy's Got a New Boyfriend," Hamell on Trial
* "Twin Cinema," The New Pornographers
* "Don't Ask," Einstein's Little Homunculus
Ai yi yi, what have we wrought upon this earth? Suffice it to say, though, that I will do the proper and fatherly thing by not including Lords of Acid's "Slave to Love," no matter how much he begs. Trouble is, he will, and his sister will join in. Sigh.

I have an ongoing project that I may never see the end of. Every now and then, I open up this list, and start reading from where I left off last time. I continue reading until I'm hemorrhaging with laughter hard enough that it is too physically painful to continue, and note where I stopped so I can pick it up from there later.

After four stages of this, I have successfully made it to 103. I am a weak man. (If memory serves, I have [livejournal.com profile] lonita to blame for this. [EDIT: Sorry, it was [livejournal.com profile] mousme])

Someone please correct me if I've got the facts on this wrong:

As previously reported:
* The New York Court of Appeals, by a vote of 4 to 2, rejected a set of four lawsuits that would have legalized gay marriage in the state.
* The Georgia state courts upheld that state's anti-same-sex marriage constitutional amendment.

And now:
* Nebraska recently reinstated its voted-mandated ban on same-sex marriages.
* Tennessee courts rejected efforts to keep an initiative regarding an amendment restricting same-sex marriages off of this November's ballots.

This is why I'm doing Blogathon in 2006.

Reminder: this year, I am blogging in support of the International Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission, a non-profit organization dedicated to the securing of human rights for those facing discrimination or violence based on sexual orientation, gender identity or HIV status. Readers of this journal have already pledged nearly $100; in addition to those I have already thanked profusely, allow me to add [livejournal.com profile] spoothbrush to the List of Eternal Gratitude.

If you would like to contribute, please click on the link at the bottom of this entry and make a pledge. And thank you for bearing with me.

And be sure to join me and the rest of the Blogathonists on Saturday, July 29, starting at 9 a.m. Eastern time and ending 24 hours later, when I will be posting every half-hour. It promises to be a blast, and even if you're not able to contribute financially, your presence-in-spirit may be the only thing that gets me through 'til dawn. (Well, that and caffeine.)

Oh, and a quick plug: [livejournal.com profile] shadesong and [livejournal.com profile] zarhooie are also doing the Blogathon this year, in support of RAINN and Heifer Project International, respectively, both important and worthy organizations, and both needing your support as well.
