slipjig3: (orson welles)
First of all, y'all have made proverbial jaw drop: I went in seeking a minimum of 35 to 40 responses to the top ten movie survey, hoping I could squeak by. Somehow, you all came through with 71 lists, leaving me deeply humbled. Thank you so much to everyone who took the time to respond, and more thank-yous to everyone who pimped the survey out! And now that the torrent of information has slowed to mere drip, I take great pleasure in presenting...

The Final Results

*confetti* *noisemakers*

How the results were tabulated: Movies were ranked first according to how many total votes they received—a movie with four votes would beat out a movie with only three votes no matter what. From there, ties were resolved according to how many rank points each film received: a vote in the #1 slot on someone's list earned that movie 10 rank point, a #2 slot earned 9 points, and so on down to 1 point for a movie listed #10. So, for example, if a movie appeared on two people's lists, once in the #2 slot and once in the #7 slot, it would receive a total of 13 rank points (9 for the #2 vote, and 4 for the #7 vote). For lists presented "in no particular order," each film named received exactly 5.5 points.

Please note:
1) Those of you who requested changes to your lists: I'm sorry, but I stuck with your original votes. One, I was tabulating the results as I went, and to go back and change those results would be rather difficult. And two, I needed to be fair to everyone, which meant disallowing changes universally to prevent a flurry of "Omigod, I just looked at these other lists, and now I remember all these other movies...." If it helps, I forgot a very important one myself, and held myself to the same standard. Again, my apologies.

2) If you pimped out the survey in your journal, you may want to post a link to these results as well, since the majority of voters were not regular readers of this journal. Thank you again!

The standings: For most of this contest, it was a three-way race for Number One, between Casablanca, Fight Club and The Princess Bride. In the end, each of them received exactly 15 votes (eclipsing the fourth-place finisher, which received only ten). Thus, the rank points ended up deciding the winner, and once again, I am in a position to announce that the Grand Poobah of Cinema is...

The Princess Bride

Hereafter, I am proud to present the list of the top 100 movies of all time, as selected by you, the readers of this journal. Note that when two or more movies share the same rank number, they are tied at that position. (I probably should have cut the list off around #60, since it rapidly devolves into a series of 5- and 6-way ties, but it was too interesting to keep to myself.)

The rest of the top 100 )

Some random bits of data:
* Number of different movies voted for: 412, from Abre Los Ojos to Zulu.
* Number of movies to receive multiple votes: 110
* Movie that received the most #1 votes: Casablanca, with seven
* Number of movies tied for last place: 34, unless you're counting those that received zero votes, in which case....
* Number of movies with "American" titles that received votes: 5: Beauty, Graffiti, History X, President (The), and Psycho.
* Number of voters who tried to slip two lists past me: one (had I counted her other list as well, The Seven Samurai would have ranked higher, and Spirited Away would have appeared in the final running.
* Some movies that, somewhat surprisingly, received zero votes: Gone With the Wind, Psycho, The Sound of Music, Raging Bull, Taxi Driver, This Is Spinal Tap

Again, thank you all so much for your participation, encouragement and support, on both this and the CinemaBowl Playoffs. I am happy to announce that I am &*$%#@! done. Thank you, Cleveland! Good night!
