slipjig3: (don music)
Yesterday, I unearthed a Sunday-sized crossword I'd started constructing late last year and abandoned because I was an idiot for choosing a theme that was heavy on $2 letters and light on anything resembling convenience of layout. And like an idiot, I chose this beast as my distraction to get me through the Workday of Terminal Boredom today. But somehow (mostly by excising most of what I'd already done with a claw hammer and starting over), I actually got the thing done, even the sections I was sure I'd never be able to pull off, killing it off only minutes before the end of my shift.

Thing was, I knew it was coming. I was bracing for it even as I was filling in that last miserable little corner. You could have set your watch by it:

* Completed grid: 9:55
* Waved grid at coworker/cheering section, informing her that I am, and I quote, "a bad-ass motherf***er": 10:00
* Found the stupid frickin' mistake I knew was hiding in there, the bastard: 10:01 (Coworkers were amused that I spotted it in the middle of the stairwell on the way out)
* Narrowly stopped myself from leaping into oncoming traffic because it was in the corner that I'd started with and built the entire puzzle around: 10:02

Good news is that it's fixed, with only a minor loss in the niftiness factor. Knowing me, the word count's too high. Hope Will Shortz likes it.

My other accomplishment for the day: finding the exact spot on the cat's back that makes it lick its lips uncontrollably when you scratch it. Hours of entertainment.
