Last night, [livejournal.com profile] rafaela and I had the great pleasure of attending a Solstice party at Mandala House, the homestead of card-carrying Awesome People [livejournal.com profile] aquila_dominus and [livejournal.com profile] cluegirl down in Troy. Due to my painful inability to get get out of work early (oh, yay, snowstorm, for ruining the lives of even those of us who didn't get buried like a Roland Emmerich movie), we were only able to attend for a little over two hours, but dear gods, was this what I needed right now. A few highlights:

* We managed to get lost despite there being only one turn after getting off the Interstate—go, Google Maps, go!—so we called ahead to get flagged in. The following conversation transpired:

Navigator: All right, you're going to come upon a house with a whole bunch of Christmas lights on your right.
Me: Okay, we're at the turn, and we OH DEAR HEAVENLY CRAP...!

Seriously, workers on the International Space Station probably have to pull their blinds to get any sleep when this thing is on. (No, this was not where the party was.)

* Immediately upon setting foot in the living room, [livejournal.com profile] cluegirl handed each of us a mug of wassail. At that precise moment, I felt truly happier than I have in weeks.

* The house. Oh, my gods, the house. There will be another entire post about that house. I want that house. I would gladly sleep in the closet under the stairs if it meant waking up every morning in that house.

* Food ruled. Natch.

* There were whoopie pies! Several folks had their first sanctioned whoopie pie experience that eve. [livejournal.com profile] light_in_motion was the wisest of the bunch of us, in that she realized before biting that there was no way a single mortal human could consume one of these in a single sitting, so she decided to quarter it. [livejournal.com profile] aquila_dominus offered to fetch her a knife:

[livejournal.com profile] aquila_dominus: Sharp knife? Dull knife?
[livejournal.com profile] light_in_motion: Whoopie pie knife!

I must say that, although I had know idea what such a knife would be, once I got a look at it, I had to admit that yes, that is exactly what a whoopie pie knife would look like. (Better yet, we've got one very much like it. It has already been renamed.)

* In addition to the aforementioned, also in attendance were [livejournal.com profile] blimix, [livejournal.com profile] icarusfallen8, [livejournal.com profile] botia (who'd brought snakes and a chameleon), and several people whose LJ names I didn't catch. Can anyone help?

* As I said, I'll likely be writing more on this, but I would be remiss if I didn't mention here: even in light of it being our first visit, it felt like home. I'd missed that.

Blessed be, everyone.
