So, that puzzle I sent to Will Shortz at the New York Times, the one he sent back for another revision? I cranked out a revision that I was only semi-happy with and e-mailed him the grid; he responded yesterday, saying that it still had some problems, and asked if I'd have another go at it. Encouraging.
So this morning, I whacked my head against the desk for an hour or so and fixed what needed fixin'. I wasn't completely happy with it, and told Will so, but I solved more problems than I created, and crossed my fingers.
An hour later, he wrote back with some very kind words, and one absolutely beautiful one:
"Yes."
My gods. A Sunday New York Times crossword. By me. This is my Channel crossing, my Everest. I may never stop dancing.
