I know I'm asking for big fat honking trouble on this one, but:

The 2003 Movie Survey, LJ Edition

What I need from everyone is a list of your 10 favorite movies of all time, in order (i.e. #1 is "greatest", #2 is "2nd greatest", etc.) Results will be posted here in a few weeks. Only one list per customer, please.

How the scores will be tabulated: The winning movies will be determined by a count of total votes received. Ties will be broken according to total number of "points": A movie in the #1 spot on someone's list will get 10 points for that list, a movie in the #2 spot will get 9 points, etc.

A little background: I've done this survey countless times over the years. I used to do albums instead of movies, until I realize that music tastes are generally too fragmented to produce a good final tally; movies, on the other hand, are closer to being a "shared experience". I've administered the movie survey twice in the last few years among family and friends (the results of which I may post at a future date) whenever boredom struck hard. Unfortunately, said friends and family are now sick to death of it, although if any of them are reading this, they are more than welcome to chime in again. Thus, I've decided to lob it out into the LJ community and see what sticks. If I become buried alive in responses, tell Kristi I love her, and tell Abbey she can have my GameBoy. If I am utterly ignored, 't will be a most adequate deterrent to future such silliness.

Oh, and could you all either link to this and/or meme it out for me? Thanks!

Guess I might as well break my own ice:

1) Singin' in the Rain
2) The Conversation
3) The Piano
4) The Thin Blue Line
5) Schindler's List
6) Vanya on 42nd Street
7) Brazil
8) The Producers
9) Raiders of the Lost Ark
10) Mulholland Dr.

#11 would probably be either Rear Window or Citizen Kane. Or something else that I'll remember at 3 in the morning and slap my forehead over.

*smile* You're welcome, again! thanks for commenting back.

Except, I think I now have to knock Memento down to a Runner-up in favor of The Lord Of The Rings, being placed behind Spirited Away, even though I said there's no real order. That's all three parts of LotR, even the one that hasn't come out yet. Can I do that? I want to change my vote!

Oh, and you should really watch Silverado, if you never have. That's the greatest western movie ever made. And I know that's a ranking people have several different opinions about,. but seriously, its amazing. The cast list alone is impressive: Kevin Kline, Scott Glen, Danny Glover, and Kevin Costner, with as many wonderful hihg-ranking actors in the supporting roles. I even though it beat out The Magnificent Seven in western movie quality.

but maybe you've already seen it. ^-^

I've been very apethetic to movies in the last few years, (I can't remember the last time I saw a movie in the theatre and come out going "OMG that was incredible") but from memory ....

1. Requiem for a Dream
2. Six Degrees of Seperation
3. Memento
4. The Usual Suspects
5. Pi
6. American Beauty
7. Pulp Fiction
8. Groove
9. Traffic
10. I'm all that I want (Margaret Cho)

A few honorable mentions include the Lord of the Rings (only saw the first one so far but I'm sure I'll love the Trilogy), the Star Wars Hexlogy (I'm sure I'll like Part III), The Godfather Trilogy, The Jay and Silent Bob Quadlogy (sense a patern here?) The Lion King, Aladin, Little Mermaid, Mulan, Monster's Inc, Toy Story I and II (the current era of Disney / Pixar films minus of course bombs like Pocohontas, Hercules and that stupid Hunchback), The Iron Giant, The Princess Bride, The Joy Luck Club, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, Almost Famous, Being John Malkovich, The Graduate, Sneakers, Good Will Hunting, Snatch and Lock Stock and 2 smoking barrels (basically anything by Guy Richie before he hooked up with Madonna), anything that has David Mamet's fingerprints on it, and anything directed by Kubrick, and I'm sure a million other movies that I love to watch but either 1) forgot to mention or 2) haven't seen them yet.

You did far better than I would've (unless I decided to cut-'n'-paste from IMDb); I am muchly impressed. Thank you for your list!

I particularly thank you for your list, because basically you've named just about every movie that I wanted to list but couldn't find room for. Danke!

Oooo.... I've still want to see Pi and Being John Malkovich, but never had the chance. Iron Giant was good, wasn't it?

Forgot to add Dark City in my list. Good movie.

6. Labrynth

8. The Princess Bride
9. The Godfather
10. Cruel Intentions

Iron Giant was really really good. I think people were surprised since it wasn't a Disney film how amazing it came out. Incredible hand drawn animation (a throwback to the 50s) with tear jerking moments. One of my favorite animated movies.

Great list! (Another vote for Raiders! Woohoo!) Thanks for taking the time to respond. I have to say, asking LJ members to participate in this is a lot more gratifying than asking coworkers, who tend to whine, "Ohhh, I don't think I even know ten movies..."
