So [livejournal.com profile] rafaela was giving me a hard time a few moments ago about the fact that I had a crush on Christine "Moose" McGlade from You Can't Do That on Television back when I was a lad of 13. After trying unsuccessfully to defend said crush (I mean, c'mon, she was total geek magnet material), I decided to look her up on Wikipedia. There I found the following, offset in a paragraph all its own:

"McGlade has a rather interesting cult following to this day, mostly made up of men in their late twenties and early thirties who found McGlade attractive as teenagers."

Wikipedia can officially bite my crank.

Hah! Hmm, I'm trying to remember if I crushed on anyone on YCDTOT... eh. Not really. Still, that wikipedia quote RULES. :)

I knew a girl in fifth or sixth grade who reminded me of McGlade, named Maureen Dunn. Yes, I was a viewer, too, from 'round 1983 to 'round 1986. Another girl from the town I lived in back in '86 (Vienna, VA) won a content and got to be slimed on the show.

I can't remember many of my TV crushes that far back, but I'm actually putting together an entry about TV crushes of mine I do recall.

Y'know, that little tidbit had me rushing to the "history" page for that entry to determine if it was a recent edit. Altering a Wikipedia entry like that just to get someone's goat would be comedy gold.

This sort of thing is much more common than you might think, actually. I once took an informal survey of several older Doctor Who fans who grew up on the show. With only one exception, everyone's favorite female companion was whoever was with the Doctor when they were ~13.

In all seriousness, I do think that's pretty interesting -- to think there's a narrow window when puberty hits when a lot of things get arranged and set, with far-reaching effects.
