So anyway,
kimberly_a posted a list of her 100 favorite movies of all time a while back (and a very cool list it is, too; do check it out if you haven't already done so). Being the opinionated geek that I am, I of course had to write up my own, so here it is, lj-cut to seal in freshness:

Like my forebear's, these are listed in chronological order, rather than best-to-worst, which would give me a panic attack if I tried it. These aren't necessarily the Best or the Brightest, but rather the ones that I love in my heart of hearts. You know, the ones that I would stop on while flipping channels, even if I'd already seen them the day before.
A few things I don't like about my list:
1) Way too top-heavy with recent releases.
2) Not enough comedies.
3) Not enough guilty pleasures. (Still, I think my removal of Shakes the Clown was in everyone's best interest.)
4) Too many obvious choices. (Of course, many of those obvious choices are obvious for a reason...)
5) Too much Terry Gilliam.
6) Couldn't find a way to fit in Holy Smoke, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, Three Kings, A Hard Day's Night, or any Disney. Oh, well.
Oh, and if there's anything glaringly obvious that's not here, odds are it's because I haven't seen it. And yes, that goes for The Godfather, Some Like It Hot, Titanic, and anything in the Lord of the Rings series. You may start throwing rocks now.

Date: 2003-04-25 12:50 pm (UTC)On the other hand, you also list some movies that Shannon and/or I absolutely hated (such as Pi and Prospero's Books). Interesting!
Oh, and I've seen Titanic at least 3 times, but I might very well shoot myself in the head before listing it as one of my 100 favorite movies. No way in hell. It's a great big ball of very pretty cheese, in my opinion.

Date: 2003-04-26 05:40 am (UTC)Last Night seriously grew on me; it has my vote for one of the best final shots ever; I still can't listen to "Guantanamera" without getting the chills. Is it just me, or does Canada make better movies than us?
I will say that Pi and Prospero's Books are acquired tastes, especially the latter; Peter Greenaway has a real talent for alienating people (this is the guy who did The Cook, the Thief, His Wife and Her Lover, after all). Prospero made my list strictly for the visuals, which are to die for, and Gielgud's performance.

Date: 2003-04-26 08:06 am (UTC)What did you think of Fierce Creatures (noting that Fish was on your list, which would also be on mine).
And heck, about the lack of comedies, you have Shot in the Dark, the above mentioned Fish, some Mel Brooks, and Grail. What more could you ask for?
Well, glad you asked. Here's some comedies from the list I'll probably never do:
Rat Race
Noises Off
Chaplin (well, not quite, but about a comedian)
The Court Jester, and Secret Life of Walter Mitty
Arsenic and Old Lace (though I know you've seen this...)
