[livejournal.com profile] yuki_onna recently posted about receiving a package from one of her characters. This made me think of my own semi-recent post about a letter I received when I was a month old, and still own.

So I ask you: what is the greatest thing you've ever received in the mail?

My darling friend Cindy sent me a watercolor of a 2 forest creatures having tea. It was a complete suprise, and is one of the favorite things.

kool-aid in kuwait.

there's a story behind it: before [livejournal.com profile] supremegoddess1 and i started dating, we were chatting back and forth. at one point she asked me if i needed or wanted anything, and i replied with "kool-aid." she sent me kool-aid alright... the kind to which you have to add sugar. i remember being so excited when i saw the customs slip for my package... and then laughing my camo'd behind off about the kind of kool-aid when i opened it. she meant well. she really did.

This is tough. May I break it down by personal eras?

Before puberty: the day I got a kit of booklets from the West Berlin subway and elevated company. From the ages of nine through eleven, I wrote to every transit company whose address I could find and asked in their native language for a copy of their subway map. I wound up with lots of cool maps, all of which I still have. Since then I've picked up fresh copies when I travel. When I was a kid, this was my perpetual Christmas.

High school: on the Winter Solstice of 1991 I received my early admission acceptance. I no longer had to worry about getting into college, and soon I wouldn't have to worry about paying for it either.

College: My mother sent a ridiculously large care package, filled with cookies and books and all sorts of stuff. I walked from the campus post office to various places handing out cookies to friends.

When I was dating [livejournal.com profile] chaggalagirl long distance, she once sent a sweet, hand-written letter. At the end she was running out of stuff so she just quoted "I must stop Heather!" from one of the journal-writing scenes in Heathers. I love a reference on that level.

Most recently: two years ago I sent myself three boxes of books and magazines while I was traveling around France. It was wicked nice to come home and get a bunch of toys to remind me of a great trip.

I don't know about the greatest thing ever. The greatest thing I've received in the mail *recently* was a gift swap package full of awesomeness that just made my jaw drop. The greatest thing ever, though? I mean, how do you compare a birthday pie from my mother my first year at college, the last note I got from my grandmother, and an invitation to Disney World when I was five?

It's a toss-up between the handwritten note from Ed Ferman at THE MAGAZINE OF FANTASY AND SCIENCE FICTION in 1980, the handwritten note from Christie Hefner when I applied to be an editorial assistant for PLAYBOY Magazine in 1987, or the handwritten note from Otto Penzler when I applied to be his personal assistant in 2005.

The best thing I received was just after I'd gotten out of the hospital with the episode that led to my eventual MS diagnosis. It was a package put together by my BPAL girls...there was a group of maybe 15 of us that frequented our own "bpalchat" room. They all sent little bits of love to one person, who compiled it into one big "get well soon, we love you" package. There was tea, books, books-on-tape, jewelry made by one of the girls, and, of course, some BPAL. It really, really shown light into a very dark time for me. I'll be eternally grateful for that. Unfortunately, now, we don't really use our "room" anymore. I miss it.

A black forest cake from [livejournal.com profile] harold3, made with chocolate that he MADE HIMSELF. Fermented the pods and everything. It was fabulously delish.

But in general, I am happy with many things I get in the mail - especially now that almost all of my bills are sent via e-mail. :P

The full score for the orchestral version of Aerosmith's "Dream On". Air mailed from England by Michael Kamen himself. (Because I asked him where I could find a copy.)
