One of the really nice things about being in the Boston area is, of course, being within an hour's drive from my kids. This means not only do I get to see them more often in general, but l can also pinch-hit when Kristi, their mom, is in a pinch where child care is involved. For example, she can give me a ring a week or two in advance and say, "Hey, I've got an early appointment on Monday the 15th. Can you get here around 8 a.m. and just make sure Nik gets on the bus on time?" And I, having an fairly open schedule, can usually say, "Sure! I'll see you at 8 on Monday!"

This works out well for everyone. Except, of course, when it doesn't. Like, say, on those days when I display the memory retention skills of a stale bag of Cool Ranch Doritos, and instead of being up early and on the road I'm awakened at 8:10 by a ringing cell phone.

Me: Hello?
Kristi: ...Adam?
Me: [long pause] Oh, [EXPLETIVE]! [EXPLETIVE] [EXPLETIVE] [EXPLETIVE]ing [EXPLETIVE]!

...followed by the sound of my forehead meeting the nearest solid object, forcefully and repeatedly.

So, yes, I had flaked like nobody's business. I basically want to crawl under a piece of furniture and molder for a while because I it's the sort of thing that I have absolutely no excuse for other than having the innate intelligence of half a tub of spackling paste. *sigh*

But I did laundry! That counts for something, right? Right?

...*sigh*
