Hokay, mystery lovers, here's a little brainteaser for y'all.

The location: Kristi's new house, where I'm chasing the kids over the long weekend.

Exhibit A:

This is the oil burner's emergency on-off switch, located in the kitchen just inside the entrance, on an empty stretch of wall between said entrance and the door to the basement.

Exhibit B:

This is the kitchen light switch, located on the other side of the entrance behind the baker's rack and the coffee maker.

Question: Why did we have no hot water for showers this morning?

Builders and remodelers in this part of the world tended to put stuff wherever they had room, or where convenience dictated. The house is probably so old that the original heating plant was coal-fired, and oil heat was a later addition.

Wow. That's colossally stupid placement...I'd have to have that furnace cutoff switch recessed and covered with a box or something, and relocate the kitchen switch.

OTOH, I'm somewhat heartened to see that my home isn't the only one with kooky/stupid/insane wiring/design choices...

A friends bathroom light switch was located inside the medicine cabinet, and was simply a metal knob that blended with the bolts of the medicine cabinet. I peed with the lights off in that bathroom for about a year before I got around to asking how to turn on the freekin' lights.
