Okay, I tried this once before eons ago, but I made a few tactical errors in the process that made failure inevitable. I apologize to those of you who've already been through this once (or twice, if you're [livejournal.com profile] odhierre or [livejournal.com profile] vaclav2), but I am a terminally bored man with a raging list obsession that must be indulged.

Yes, folks. It's that damned Movie Survey again.

Here's how to participate:

1) Prepare a list of the 10 Greatest Movies Ever Made, in your opinion. You can define the word "greatest" however you wish, but all titles must be theatrical releases; made-for-TV films will be ignored. Note also that order is important: a film in the #1 spot on your list will have more weight than a film in the #10 spot. If you absolutely cannot rank the items on your list, make sure you indicate that the list is in "no particular order."

2) Submit the list as a response to this entry. Only lists that appear in full as responses in this string will be counted; lists that appear only in your own journal will not, although of course you're welcome to cross-post all you want. Please do not read the responses here until you've written and submitted your own list. Once you've done so, read to your heart's content, but I want everyone's entry to be untainted by the other respondents.

3) Sit back and wait. I will tabulate the results after a reasonable amount of time and post them in this journal, assuming that the number of responses reaches critical mass.

If you wish to pimp this out in your own journals, you're welcome to do so. (Just make sure that you refer them here; the big problem last time is that I memed when I should've pimped, and I couldn't chase down the threads.) Thank you all in advance for your time, your cooperation, and above all your patience in dealing with online dweebs with too much discretionary time. Enjoy!

Nice to see "Impromptu" mentioned!
It's one of my favorites -- although not on my "greatest" list.

Sorry, I forgot you said no respondents.

Should I redo my list without the commentary and appendix?

No, no, that's fine. I just didn't want anyone to base their lists on what other people have already said. Once your list is in, you're welcome to do as you please.

Gone With the Wind
Arsenic and Old Lace
Thomas Crown Affair
Pirates of the Caribbean
Brigadoon
An Affair to Remember
Lord of the Rings*
Always
Finding Nemo

*I think all three LOTR should be counted as one whole movie, since that's how Tolkien wrote the books. But if I had to pick, I would choose ROTK.

just curious...

on the Thomas Crown Affair, do you mean the original Steve Mcqueen, or the Pierce Brosnan remake. I've never actually seen the original, so I was wondering if you rank it better than the remake...

Compiling a list like this always makes me acutely aware of how few truly great movies I've seen. I'm sure there many greater films out there, beyond my experience. But here's my contribution:

1. Gone with the Wind
2. Ran
3. Casablanca
4. Gandhi
5. The Lord of the Rings (taking the trilogy as one work)
6. Moulin Rouge
7. A Passage to India
8. Star Wars
9. Thelma & Louise
10. Pirates of the Caribbean

Reading through the other responses, I see you ask us to pick *one* of the LotR movies. I'd have to say "The Fellowship of the Ring".

But I think you should reconsider taking them all as one. Unlike, say, the Star Wars trilogies, there is a unity to the production that really makes them a single great work.

shit. I can never think of movies on the fly!

I guess I'll define "greatest" as "movies I can watch over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over again and never tire of."

1. Who Framed Roger Rabbit
2. Monty Python and the Quest for the Holy Grail (was this a theatrical release or not?)
3. The Princess Bride
4. Chocolat
5. Monsoon Wedding
6. Pirates of the Caribbean
7. The Nightmare Before Christmas
8. Big Trouble in Little China
9. Disney's Beauty and the Beast
10. Ronin

Goodness, I'm so weird. The end.

Okay, gotta ask...

"Big Trouble in Little China"? Is this is that Kurt Russell movie where he's a truck driver who ends up in some kind of underground war in Chinatown? Has Kim Cattrall in it? If so, why?
