Whoa, dude...
Mar. 13th, 2004 11:53 amThe word "dude," I must admit, does occasionally make its way into my spoken vocabulary, but I'm reluctant to use it in my written diatribes, unless something sufficiently awe-inspiring and wonderful crops up.
And so I say: Whoa, dude...
daev requested my mailing address not too long ago, for unspecified reasons (other than a vague reference to "goods"). Well, the goods arrived today: item one is a CD from the inimitable and astounding FiddleGoddess Lisa Boucher, with her personal compliments. The other (omigodomigodomigod) is a much-valued copy of Record Service 20th Birthday: 20 Years of Music from Champaign-Urbana. Still sealed. In a freaking longbox, kids. I'm almost afraid to open the thing. (But open it I shall: it's got the Elvis Brothers, Captain Rat and the Blind Rivets...omigod, the Outnumbered? Omigodomigodomigod...)
daev, I bow before you, deeply in awe and in your eternal debt. We'll need to discuss return payment of goods in some way or another (although I sincerely doubt I have anything that you don't have).
And so I say: Whoa, dude...
dude, where's my linguistic competence?
Date: 2004-03-13 10:02 pm (UTC)At the RS going-outta-bizness sale I was pimping these things to every college student who idly picked one up. The disc is an amazing survey of the musical past of C/U -- from which I can conclude that the '70s sucked but the '80s were a musical mecca in our little college town.
I first heard this disc when I was home visiting Lisa Boucher, during my grad school stint in California. The realization that Champaign had had actual great music led me on a binge of hunting down CDs and tapes and LPs by everybody from The Vertebrats to Otis And The Elevators, The Moon Seven Times to Hum, tinged with nostalgic regret that I had ignored these bands when they were alive. I found Jon Ginoli, leader of the Outnumbered, living in San Francisco with his new "fag rock" band Pansy Division.
(I have a couple more copies should anyone else be interested. Still in their freaking longboxes.)

Hm ... I suspect you do. We should each do mix tapes of the stuff we've discovered since we were last polluting each other's musical tastes. :-)
(By the way, do you remember the Unknown Band that I had you play on Requiem For Finnegan, hoping that someone would call up and identify it? Turns out it was the Canadian folk band Spirit Of The West. Have you heard them?)
Re: dude, where's my linguistic competence?
Date: 2004-03-15 07:59 am (UTC)Not just the 80's, but the early 90's as well, when there was actually such a thing as a CU Sound: Hot Glue Gun, Honcho Overload, Mother... Okay, I need to discontinue that list because it's getting me all misty...
...The Moon Seven Times to Hum...
Need both. Need. I've done some matter gatherance myself, too; since leaving I've gotten my mitts on Lonely Trailer's 2-disc compilation, one from the Suede Chain, and the Signalmen (band w/ Tim McKeage and at least 2 Lonely Trailer alumni; 'nuff said). Anything I can scam off of you would be enormously appreciated, especially since Lauren got custody of all the Last Straw, dang it. (Oh, and: Pansy Division comes from the Outnumbered?!)

Yes, yes, yes. I think I need to send you a list of prospective tracks, because otherwise you'd get my CD and go down the list saying, "Got it...got it...heard it...got it..."
...Spirit of the West...
I know the name; I've probably heard some of their stuff at some point, but can't recall.
Oh, and
