What I'm not talking about today

Today I'm going to talk about driving up this morning to visit with my kids.
I'm going to talk about how happy they were to see me, and to receive the books I'd bought for them on the way up: The Monster at the End of This Book for Nik, and The Little Prince for Abbey.
I'm going to talk about seeing Nik after his most recent trip to Grandpa's barber, which left him looking less like a young Tom Petty and much, much more like the adorable child star of a TV sitcom circa 1957.
I'm going to talk about Abbey slipping into Grandma's big recliner next to me slathered with lipstick and smelling like she'd been attacked by a roving gang of Mac makeup counter personnel. (When I asked if she'd put on perfume, she said, "No, I just woke up fresh.")
I'm going to talk about looking through Abbey's art that came home with her after her last day of school, including the paper-plate portrait of a goat with a caption on the back in her handwriting: "My favorite part of 'The Three Billy Goats' was when the big billy goat trampled on the troll's body. Then poked him in the eye."
But I'm not, not, not going to talk about the reason for the visit: to say goodbye. I'm not ready for that. Not ready at all.
