Murder Ballads in ascent
Sep. 16th, 2013 10:12 pmFor those of you who were wondering about the super-secret-because-we-don't-talk-about-it-enough music project that
cluegirl and I have been fomenting for ages now, I am pleased to announce that we have made capital-P Progress! Our band of two, Murder Ballads, has been hampered by the three-hour drive that usually separates us, but after months upon months of sporadic, "when we get the chance" rehearsals on Google-chat planning sessions, this past weekend we finally converged for our first-ever recording session. With the talented Joel Lord handling the production end of things and
aquila_dominus getting some great candid promotional photos, we whipped out three songs in 45 minutes, chucked them out due to technical problems, then laid them down again even better, along with a fourth that went way more smoothly than I think either of us expected and an early tentative version of a fifth that needs more work before it's fit for the light of day. And it must be said, if you don't me bein' the one sayin': we sounded damned good.
Joel is doing the final mix on those four songs—representing a cross-section of both of our songwriting styles—sometime this week; from there, we have plans to reconvene in November for further recording of new material, along with any overdubs on the existing material that seem like they need them. In the meantime, Catt and I will be going in for at least one more rehearsal, with some songs of hers, some of mine, a few covers, and even possibly our first co-written works, God willing and the creek don't rise. Once it's all finished, the resulting album, tentatively titled Pretty in Scarlet, will be up for sale at Bandcamp, along with some behind-the-scenes video that
aquila_dominus captured for us. We are obscenely excited about this project, and can't wait to let you all get a glimpse into our proverbial box of wonders. Stay tuned for more details.
Speaking of which,
cluegirl and I are also hoping to promote the album with a house concert or two (and remember that if we reach the magic number of two, it becomes a full-fledged tour), so if anyone in the Northeast (especially the Boston area) would like to play host, please drop us a line to let us know!
