The past, blasting
Jul. 19th, 2005 09:45 pmWayyyyy back in my junior year in college, I was in this folkish band called the Mutual Admiration Society (no relation to the Toad the Wet Sprocket / Nickel Creek supergroup of the same name), along with
odhierre, my then-fiance Lauren, and our friends Dave, Ken and Christa. The band, such as it was, acted mostly as a cover band with a few originals, including one by me, "Spin the Bottle," that I actually still perform. We played exactly one show to an audience that we knew everyone in, finished in eight songs flat, and that was that. (Rather than retell the whole tale, I'll direct you here for the necessary info.) We weren't at all polished, and most of us had little or no performance experience, but we had fun. The only residue from this experience was a handful of copies of the cassette tape of that one performance, tucked safely away in boxes somewhere.
Yesterday, in the mail, I got a package from dear friend
knotwork, who was our de facto roadie that night, and who possessed one of the eight or so existent copies of that tape.
She ripped it to mp3, and put it on a disc.
Oh. My. God. I officially feel old. (It doesn't help that I'd just gotten done watching The Big Chill for the first time in ages.)
To
knotwork: Thank you so, so much! I truly can't thank you enough. To everyone else: No, you will NOT get to hear any of this. I have wonderful memories of the experience, but I have serious misgivings about letting it out into the wild. Besides, Led Zeppelin may sue.
