Okay, maybe I'm a little late in hearing of Kaki King, but I think this officially counts as a "better late than never" sort of deal. Visit her website, and make sure you watch this video. That sound you hear in the background is a thousand guitarists' jaws dropping in unison, present company included.

'Tis. Heard her on Prairie Home Companion the other night, of all places.

Very interesting.

I like the sound. It is reminiscent for me of some of the experimental stuff I heard my former frequaintence (not quite a friend, but more than just an acquantaince) Peter Mulvey do when he first came back from Ireland. She's a more excitingly talented guitar player, though.

If you're not familiar with his stuff, I highly recommend checking it out. He's a folk singer, for the most part, with only a few songs that are strictly instrumental.

Story too long to type. :) You'll have to ask me about it next time you are in my area. At least that'll persuade you to stop by. :P :)

Please do! I know of a few, like the late Michael Hedges (whom Kaki reminds me of a lot) and Steve Tibbetts, and I'm always interested to hear more.

That was amazing. Although I don't know why Firefox had to try to act as a server eight times. Zone Alarm is a good thing sometimes.

Is it because it was a QuickTime file?

Nah, the files don't usually do that. Probably the site has some spyware or some cookie grabber or some other crap on it. Who knows. Then again it could be something completely innocent.

I am so cynical. I thought, "oh yeah? How can you say that everyone will recognize this as 'the best'? Pshaw! That's strictly a judgment call, based on someone's tastes." <--okay, but I thought it really quickly, so it was a snap thought (still before coffee time here)

Okay, then I clicked on the link. That's one amazing guitarist!! I like how she looks like it's nothing at all for her to play like that. "What? I'm just chilling here on a video set, just messing around," -type nonchalance.

Long comment short: I liked it. :)

*nods* It's the effortlessness that floored me, too. That's why I linked to the video, rather than just the track.

OK, that was really inventive and downright sexy. It's the kind of stuff that wouldn't be anywhere near as impressive if you didn't see how she was getting all that music out of the unaccompanied guitar.

Ohh, yeah. The fact that the percussive taps are coming off of her left hand.... *low whistle*

Watching that video again -- if I'm not mistaken, she's playing the fretboard of the guitar by striking it with her fingers. That is, playing it like a hammered dulcimer with her fingers as the hammers. I'm surprised it's so loud, and that she seems to do it so effortlessly. I mean, Hendrix could play that way, but when he did it you could see he was sweatin'.
