So I'm talking to my mom, and I mention that Arisia is coming up this weekend. She had a hand in making this possible (her birthday/Christmas present to me was a contribution toward the hotel room, which my father also kicked money towards), but she was a bit unclear as to what Arisia actually is.

"It's a scifi convention," I say.

"A scifi convention?" I can detect the concern in her voice.

Yup." I go on to tell her about the panels, the gaming, the repeatable-to-Mom activities, a passing mention of folks in costumes.

She sounded as if I'd just casually mentioned hosting a weekly Heroin 'n' Bestiality Pot Luck or something. "Oh, Adam, noooo...."

"Mom, it's not that bad," I said in a tone I learned somewhere around fifth grade.

She went on. "No, Adam, not that! Anything but that!"

"Mom...."

"God, Adam! You've gone over to the Dark Side!"

It was at that point that I switched over from defense to offense: "Um, Mom? Considering that you just berated my geekiness by quoting a Star Wars reference? Pot. Kettle. Respective shades thereof."

She didn't ahve much to say after that.

This is so frighteningly similar to conversations I've had with my dad...

An excuse for an Arisia question

How often have you been to Arisia? And how dramatic has it been for you? I was talking to [livejournal.com profile] zarhooie about hoping that this wouldn't be as blow-up-in-your-face dramatic as last year's Arisia, and she said, "Arisia is the drama con, sweetie." Oh.

BTW, well-played on the "Dark Side" front.

You know that old saying, "If you can remember Woodstock, you weren't there?" Well, if you get out of Arisia without drama, odds are you weren't there either.

Damn. I guess I'm going to have to attend one at some point in the future, then. Maybe if I stopped working security? :)

Aw, you WERE my drama at last Arisia! :D Even you didn't muster much. I got off about 97% drama-free last year.

I have similar conversations with my mother. My parents are both geeks but firmly in denial about it. They know more about certain types of fantasy and s.f. than I do, but they staunchly claim to be mainstream.

Ha. Ha-ha. Hah. Is all I have to say about that.

There has to be an out-the-geek program of some sort. Both our parents need help.
