The Official Arisia Report
Jan. 14th, 2007 11:43 pmGadzooks, how does one summarize something like Arisia? In 20 parts, apparently:
1) The last thing you want to discover after driving for four hours and lugging your bags up to the 12th floor is that the expletive-deleted keys don't work. Must...not...take...hostages...
2) Quote of the weekend: "Wow! Harry Potter is in the next room, wanking to homosexual Muggle entertainment!" (from Cecilia Tan's Circlet Press reading)
3) Besides that mentioned in #2, my only other panels that I went to were the one on updating traditional fairy tales, with moderating and
shadesong panelling, and the very end of the one on the author-reader contract, which I wish I'd seen more of.
4) Got more gaming in this year. That mission is accomplished, anyway.
5) The Hyatt Regency Cambridge: will God's lightning rain down upon me if I tactfully call it "problematic?" If you're currently reading the journals of any other Arisia participants, you've already heard about the elevators that would break if you looked at them in an unfriendly manner, the evil cloak-eating escalators, and the open atrium that made the entire hotel sound like a Mets game twenty-four seven. Bleagh.
6) The stairs were oh-so-fun, too. Because the place is built like a ziggurat, the stairs don't wrap: You could stand at the 16th floor, and look down the stairwell diagonally clear to the fifth. Those with vertigo need not apply.
7) On the other hand, the stairwell is where I first ran into
issendai, who is a grand, grand person to spend time at a con with: witty, charming, intelligent, lovely, and hugs extraordinarily well. We ended up chatting about anything and everything on Saturday afternoon, and then again that night until we thought, "Hm, should probably check the time, which is...4 a.m. Ah. Hm. Maybe sleep would be a good idea...." Hoping beyond hope that our paths cross again.
8) I delivered the final result of a long-in-coming project to its recipient: "Shadesong: The Card Game." Considering the squeeing it was met with, I think she liked it. Sadly, it did not get played in my rpesence, but rules (and spoons) were included.
9) My official souvenir of this trip is my new stuffed pet Ebola virus, which is entirely too cute for a contagion. I've named him Kikwit. *snuggles the contagion*
10)
rafaela has also come home with a souvenir contagion, but sadly, it's of the real, nose-drippy variety. Poor dear's already passed out for the night. She had a wonderful time, too, though, I believe.
11) Awesome Indian food with
rafaela and
bikergeek on Saturday night. Chicken korma rules.
12) All, right, I'm going to try the list, and I already know I'm going to forget some names, but here goes:
rafaela,
shadesong,
yendi,
elayna,
taureanbabe,
mgrasso,
fibro_witch,
ian_gunn,
bikergeek,
issendai,
yuki_onna,
rosefox,
amalthya,
techempage,
ultra_lilac,
unknownrockstar,
jesshartley,
avivadesai,
dicotomygrrl.... Okay, brain is cramping again, so if I've left you off of the list, let me know.
13) Of the above,
issendai,
amalthya,
techempage,
yuki_onna,
ultra_lilac and
jesshartley were first-time face-to-face meetings. Hi! *waves*
14)
shadesong's party on Saturday, in
rosefox's room. Yes, indeed, that party. *fades into thought* Good party, that. Very, very good party. Really, really awesome party. Um. Yeah, the party. *walks away, distracted*
15) Gads, it's tough writing about these things when the things you want to talk about are the things you can't. At least, not here.
16) Best button of the eight we bought from Nancy's: "I'm not pompous. I'm pedantic. There's a difference. Let me explain it to you."
17) Note to self: when juggling clubs, remove your rings first. *winces in pain*
18) Special mentions go out to
shadesong for her 'Songness, to
fibro_witch and
dicotomygrrl for their amazing generosity, to
amalthya for blushing so fetchingly when people tell her how pretty she is, and to
taureanbabe for her trust, her beauty, and for making my Arisia better just by existing. *hugs* And a thousand special mentions to
rafaela, who puts up with my silliness and my cranky moods, and reminds me that I am loved and life is good and whole. *loves you*
19) My list of reasons to move to the Boston area just doubled within 48 hours. *SIGH* Want to move now.
20) I miss it. I miss everyone. The real world can go scratch.

I must say my experiences at this, my first ever con, have been phenomenal. I had a truly wonderful time, with new experiences, new doors opening, and friendships deepening.
Thank you for being a part of all of this.

I happen to have this apartment down stairs. It might be empty by summer. It would be a start.
