Also: am I the only person on earth left who still puts parentheses around the area code when writing down a phone number?

No. Sometimes I do it when typing a phone number.

I've also been known to put the "+1 " in front of it, particularly in business contexts where the communication may be traveling outside the United States.

We have 10-digit dialing, so the area code isn't parenthetical anymore....
