Aaaaaaand we're back, a day late and a dollar short, with thanks that we're not actually on a particular schedule. On the unlikely chance that you're just joining us, here's how it works: for each pairing, select the title you prefer; the winner of each will advance to round 2. Friendly reminder: there are two separate polls here, so make sure you hit both submit buttons when voting. EDIT: Oops. Deadline = Wednesday, Aprill 11, 1 p.m.

EDIT: Voting is now closed for this poll; any further votes will not be counted. Thanks for participating!

Purple Conference, Division A

[Poll #963591]

Some tough choices. Asking people to vote in B-5 is fucking cruel. A-1 is a choice between one overrated movie and one underrated (by backlash) movie, both of which are about equal. Tough, but not as painful. I adore Hooper's masterpiece, but B-8 was easy. As was B-7 (the only question there is, why is Rear Window only at 88.9%?). A-7 was easy, but if it had been the other film called Crash, I'd be kicking Sin City to the curb.

Ditto...OMG ditto.

I think this is one instance where the randomizer needed to be shot and adjusted :P

Yay, some Titanic love! Being a semi-paid movie and pop-culture observer at the time (I'd added movie reviewing to my duties at my newspaper), I watched that storm form in the months following Titanic's release; I remember some girl in Summer '98 loudly referring to "Leo DeCRAPrio!" and a slide preceding some other film that said "Raise your hand if you're in the clique that hasn't seen this flick."

For me, a sign that A) there was a backlash and B) people could get over it developed over time: my mom ran into a cable showing of the "I'm king of the world!!!!" scene in April '99 and had some disparaging remark about James Cameron in response; but then last year Mom and Dad finally saw Titanic for the first time and were struck by how much they liked it. And I find myself watching it again when it crops up on cable now.

I should try to find [livejournal.com profile] theferrett's review of the film, where he gleefully punned "I'm down with Titanic."

I did enjoy Titanic, but The Big Chill is one of my favorite movies. It is in my top five for best movie soundtracks as well.

I would have liked Titanic much better if it weren't for the plot.

Thank you. Titanic was NOT a bad movie. Personally, I blame Celine Dion.

And I'm actually not that big a basher of the song, either (though it's not my favorite Dion song; that's "It's All Coming Back to Me Now" (go Jim Steinman!)). I love the behind-the-scenes sneaking around that the song required, because James Horner and Will Jennings wrote it even though Cameron had specifically said NOT to do a song. They recorded Dion's vocals in the middle of the night, with a skeletion crew (I think just them, Dion, an engineer and one or two of her people), and only after that presented the song to Cameron.

I actually wasn't all that impressed with the movie. I kinda liked Leonardo DiCaprio, and yeah - Kate Winslet was definitely fun to watch. It was just...boring to me.

But...a friend called me and enjoined me to go watch it because I was friends with some of the founding guys from Gaelic Storm from well before that film was made and she KNEW I would want to see them up on the silver screen (and boy was she right). I wasn't in close contact with them anymore because I'd moved out of the LA area, and therefore didn't work with one of them anymore, and didn't go to their gigs anymore...so...yeah. I'm glad I saw it, and it was definitely better than my expectations - but still not overly impressed with the overall movie.

B-5 was the one that I figured would make folks the stabbiest, present company included. And I'd considered including both Crashes, but I left out the earlier one for the sake of clarity, which I kind of regret now.

whoever earwormed me with "Missing You" by John Waite is going to DIE

You need a musical megadosing to get that earworm out. I'd suggest Tom Jones's "Thunderball."

There is such a thing as medication that's worse than the cure, y'know. (As it was, I used "Beer 'n' Sex 'n' Chips 'n' Gravy" by the Macc Lads, home to the second most rockin' kazoo solo ever. It was bad enough.)

I would like to state that my vote for Fanbtasia is soully due to the love of the little dancing mushroom. Princess Bride is equally worthy and could have been vs The Mummy (1999). But Noooooooooooo!
