CinemaBowl Playoffs, Division Finals I
May. 7th, 2007 10:18 amThe plot thickens! The tension mounts! And ye God's golden gravy boat, will I be glad when this is over so I can finally reclaim my journal. Here's what hasn't changed: For each pairing, select the movie you prefer. The winner of each will advance to the Conference Semifinals a few days hence. Also unchanged: There are two polls here, so be sure to click both submit buttons. What has changed is that we're stepping up the pace, in anticipation of the next round and all rounds that follow, which will have a one-day turn-around. As a result, deadline for this is Tuesday, May 8 at 8 a.m. Thanks, all!
EDIT: Voting is now closed for this poll; any future votes will not be counted. Thanks again!
Red / Orange Conferences
[Poll #980226]
Yellow / Green Conferences
[Poll #980227]
And yes, I was referring to this set of rounds as the "Conference Quarterfinals" in earlier posts, but "Division Finals" is a bit snappier, and no less accurate. See you tomorrow!

Date: 2007-05-07 03:47 pm (UTC)OK, i give. my curiousity has gotten the better of me. what exactly is the point? and why on earth did you pair the movies that you did?? i'm sure there's a post explaining it, but i missed it.
I HAVE TO KNOW!!

Date: 2007-05-07 11:36 pm (UTC)Re the pairings: The initial set-up was totally random, even when I wanted to kick my own ass for the way they were ending up. The decision of which movies ended up in the poll was kind of arbitrary, too, although I made a point of choosing titles that are somehow iconic in their own way, tried to make sure every major subgenre was represented ("Okay, I think I need a few cheesy '80s teen comedies..."), and did my best not to miss anything too obvious.
As to why I'm doing this: Um. *crickets chirping* Brain damage? Seriously, this started off as a way to kill ginormous amounts of time at work (where I have a LOT of downtime these days), but it feeds off an ongoing curiosity. The project was inspired by the equally-pointless Band Madness, which captured my attention in a big way. I'm downright obessed with lists, rankings, etc. (not that it shows, *cough*), and the format seemed like a fun one to play with; between that website and my new Netflix account, I was sucked into a Project Vortex roughly the size of Bulgaria.
That said, there's really nothing scientific about it. This isn't the ideal way to do this in terms of final results. See, every now and then in my life (and by "in my life," I mean "for the last two decades"), I've decided to do a big Greatest Movies of All Time Poll, wherein people name their ten favorites, in order, no holds barred, with the intention of tabulating the results. It's a lot of fun, and some people are very enthusiastic about it, but because just answering the dang thing calls for a decent amount of work on the part of the interviewee, I usually fall short in number of responses, and this makes it impossible to get a good result. If I could get 100 responses or more to that one (or heck, even 50 would be enough to get a top 20 countdown), then I'd be pleased as punch, but the last few times I've tried, even on LJ, I've been lucky to get thirty. The CinemaBowl polls have the advantage of being low-thought and low-impact for Joe Movie Lover who wants to participate.

Jonathan Coulton can bite me. But not on the eardrum this time.
