I'm really conflicted about this, because I generally don't go in for surveys and the like on LJ. But darn it all, when an idea for a survey pops into my head and won't go away, I have to take steps to purge my brain of the li'l beastie. So, genties and ladlemen, allow me to introduce the world premiere of [cue impressively majestic fanfare] THE MUSIC SURVEY:

A few semantic matters:
"Artist" can refer to either an individual performer or a group of any size.
"Album" can refer to a CD, cassette, LP, 8-track, or what-have-you.

1) What was the first song you remember hearing?
Probably "Strawberry Fields Forever," the Beatles, on 8-track
2) What was the first album you ever bought with your own money?
Sgt. Pepper, the Beatles
3) What was the first concert you ever attended?
I think it was Peter Paul and Mary at the Holiday Star Theatre in Indiana
4) What was the most recent song you've heard, or the song you're listening to right now?
"She Twists the Knife Again," Richard Thompson, in the car
5) What was the most recent album you bought?
Lost in Space, Aimee Mann
6) What was the most recent concert you attended?
Ani Difranco and Hamell on Trial, in Schenectady
7) Off the top of your head, what would you say are the five best songs ever recorded?
In no particular order (and I know I'm going to screw this up):
"When I Get to the Border," Richard and Linda Thompson
"A Sailor's Life," Fairport Convention
"Hestia," Katell Keineg
"Pictures of Matchstick Men," Camper Van Beethoven
"Crucify," Tori Amos (album version)
8) The five best albums?
Again, in no order:
Hounds of Love, Kate Bush
Unhalfbricking, Fairport Convention
World of Monsters, the Drovers
Not a Pretty Girl, Ani Difranco
To Bring You My Love, P.J. Harvey
9) What was the best live show you've ever seen?
Toss-up b/w Richard Thompson and any Drovers show circa 1991
10) What was your favorite song when you were seven?
Hmmm... "Society's Child," Janis Ian
11) When you were thirteen?
"I Am the Walrus," the Beatles
12) When you were eighteen?
either "Hunting Song" by the Pentangle, or "When I Grow Up" by Michelle Shocked
13) What artists did you used to be fanatic about that you hardly even listen to now?
Beatles, Pentangle and Jethro Tull. Still love 'em all, but I'm not nearly as saturated as I used to be.
14) What in your opinion are the worst songs ever recorded?
Gads..."MacArthur Park," "I Love You Always Forever," And the worst, "From a Distance." *coughs up hairball*
15) What artist is most likely to make you cringe?
Michael Bolton, natch
16) Approximately how many albums do you own?
About 250 or so
17) What artists do you own four or more albums by?
Beatles, Michelle Shocked, P.J. Harvey, Richard Thompson, Jethro Tull, Ani Difranco, Indigo Girls
18) What album is your greatest guilty pleasure?
That would be Listen to the Band, the Monkees box set. Shut up.
19) What album are you most ashamed to admit that you ever owned?
My one saving grace is that it took only about four songs of Wilson Phillips' self-titled debut to realize that I'd made a horrible mistake.
20) What is the strangest album you currently own?
Philosophy of the World by the Shaggs, a.k.a. "the Ed Woods of rock and roll."
21) What artists would you recommend to a friend who is looking for music they've most likely never heard of?
The Drovers, easily. Ummm...this list would be awfully long, because I make a point of stockpiling stuff that's less well-known for mixes and the like, so let's just move on...
22) What song is most likely to bring you to tears?
"No Telling," Linda Thompson. Kills me every damn time.
23) What song are you most likely to crank up the volume for on a bad day?
"At the Hundredth Meridian," The Tragically Hip, or John Hammond's version of "Heartattack and Vine"
24) What song reminds you most of your current or most recent significant other?
(Why did I include this question?) Ummm... "Buildings and Bridges," Ani Difranco. Or "Good," Better Than Ezra, for multiple reasons
25) What song reminds you most of high school?
"What I Am," Edie Brickell and New Bohemians
26) Of college?
There's a lot of 'em ("When Will We Be Married" by the Waterboys, "And Dream of Sheep" by Kate Bush, "Bottle of Smoke" by the Pogues"), but the only one that is guaranteed to put me back into college-space is "Perfect View" by the Graces
27) What is your favorite radio station?
WEFT Champaign, my favorite even if I hadn't been an airshifter there
28) If you were given a music store gift certificate, what album would you most likely spend it on?
Tough call. I do need a copy of August and Everything After by Counting Crows, but I also have some Richard Shindell to get caught up on, plus...
29) If they made a movie about your life, what would you choose as the theme song?
"When I Get to the Border," Richard and Linda Thompson, as morbid as that is

Either is fine. Most people I've seen tend to copy and paste into their own journals, but it's all good.

Very nice! Thank you! And incidentally, you had cooler taste in music as a kid than I did. (Indigo Girls is the first album you bought? Wow, you are a young'un... ;) )

I think I had cooler taste in music when I was a kid because my mom had cooler taste in music - and I trusted her judgement. You can't go wrong with a mom who likes Richard Thompson, Talking Heads, Zappa, and Midnight Oil.
