Okay, this is why I shouldn't be allowed anywhere near the Internet.

Whilst persuing through the "Puzzlehunts" category on Wikipedia this morning, which is never a good idea, I discovered the existence of the University of Chicago Scavenger Hunt, of which I had not previously been aware. It's a scavenger hunt, all right, but a deranged one; it's sort of the halfway point between Caltech Ditch Day and the MIT Mystery Hunt, if either of those things mean anything to you. (Seriously, go follow the link, and look at the items list. It's like the Game of 1,000 Blank White Cards in scavenger hunt format.)

This got me to thinking about scavenger hunts.

Yep. Big honking mistake.

Somebody really needs to remove the lobe of my brain that keeps coming up with all these project obsessions. Seriously. I need sleep, people.

So. Scavenger hunt. The real problem with getting one going with my current social group is that my current social group is all over the frickin' place. I'm thinking this could go one of three ways:

1) Pick a convenient weekend, get as many folks to the Boston area (as close to a harmonic convergence as my f'list is going to experience), and do a classic 24-hour see-jungle-see-jungle-city-all-over-go-ape-crazy type of hunt.

2) Issue the list online, then pick a time and place that teams must get their items to by, either by mail or by actually showing up (Arisia might be good for this if enough people are going).

3) Do it as a camera hunt: teams must merely photograph the items rather than actually acquire them, and post the goods to whatever website seems convenient. Personally, I think an acquisition hunt would be more fun on general principle; on the other hand, a camera hunt would (a) allow pretty much anyone to play regardless of localtion or travel plans, and (b) allow the list to include such items as, say, a redheaded traffic cop, without requiring the poor person to have to come along.

So if I do, in fact, get this thing off the ground, who'd be interested? Poll time:

...but then I'm on the wrong side of the country for my participation to happen.

we did a camera hunt for work :)

it was a lot of fun...

one caveat for participation. The likelihood of me making it to Boston are very slim :(

A photohunt could be a lot of fun.

But your post reminded me of The Grunt Hunt which is inspired by the MIT mystery hunt, but isn't nearly so punishing. I've participated 3 times, and my team won once. Helluva time, you'd like the crowd too.
