Thank you to everyone who has participated in yesterday's poll! I'm actually surprised at the number of responses, considering that we're in mildly erudite territory here. Anyroad, we soldier on with the second set of Round One polls. Allow me to copy and paste the rules and disclaimers:

1) For each pairing, choose the director you prefer, using whatever criteria you see fit. Be aware that you are voting strictly on the basis of directorial skill, and not on talent in acting, writing or other fields that the candidates might be involved in. The winner of each pairing will advance to round 2.

2) If any names are unfamiliar or if you need a reminder of what anyone has directed in the past, clicking on any name will open that director's IMDb page in a new window.

3) The list of names is totally arbitrary (I likely forgot a few, although I endeavored to at least get all the big ones and cover as many eras and genres as possible), and their placement in the brackets is completely random (i.e. the management is not responsible for pitting your two favorites against each other, so deal).

4) Important: When voting, please note that there are two separate polls, so be sure to click both "Submit" buttons.

5) Feel free to pimp this out in your own journals, if you're so inclined. The more, the merrier.

Deadline for this round of voting is Wednesday, April 9 at 1 p.m. Also, you still have until 1 o'clock this afternoon to vote on yesterday's poll before voting is shut down. Thanks again! This poll is now closed, and votes have been recorded. Thank you!

Reminders:

1. George Lucas hasn't directed a watchable film since the '70s. He did not direct The Empire Strikes Back. Voting for him over Wise is like voting for ass-flavored toothpaste over, well, anything.

2. Michael Curtiz directed Casablanca. Richard Attenborough did to A Chorus Line what Chris Columbus did to Rent.

It's barely past 8am and people are expecting me to remember a lot of names. Until I have my coffee, my brain functioning will be limited to "fire bad. Tree pretty."

So thank you for reminder #2. I completely spaced on why the hell I knew Michael Curtiz' name, and my answer has been changed accordingly.

Yeah, but I hated Casablanca.... to each his/her own, right?

(I do agree with you about the Lucas/Wise bracket, though.)

You may have hated it, but it was the second-greatest movie ever made.

1) When Episode I was about to come out, one of my favorite hobbies was asking random people when the last time Lucas directed a movie was, and then watching their jaws drop upon learning it was in 1977.

2) Hey, now, I happened to like Rent. But then again, I never saw the stage show, which I think is the main factor in determining who liked the movie. (But yeah, A Chorus Line felches badgers.)

Damnit! Same question as yesterday. This time, whether or not I count Taymor's stage directing is going to make my decision for that bout.

Yeah, we're definitely getting into tricky territory there. Personally, I had no trouble voting for Taymor on the strength of her movie work alone, but Costa-Gavras is some stiff competition.

As I read this, two people have chosen Michael Bay over Bruce Beresford.

I weep.

It's up to three now. *sigh* Then again, I should link you to last year's CinemaBowl and its more open-ended follow-up, if you truly want to weep a while. (As a f'r'instance, out of a list of 512 movies, including some of the true classics of filmmaking, The Blues Brothers made the Final Eight. Somebody had to take the hari-kiri knike away from me and hide it.)

Spielberg vs Raimi? *ROAR* *WAIL* *FLAIL*

I'm gonna take mah boomstick to the randomizer, boy howdy! *BLAMMO*

It's like The Evil Dead Meets E.T!

How the hell am I supposed to choose one director of fine films over another for different reasons?!
ARGH!:D

Yeah, that one's a killer, I know. Sorry. Unfortunately, there's a lot more painful match-ups where that came from (and it's only going to get worse in future rounds).

Oh, I know it's going to get worse;), so will the roaring, accordingly. Or not.
It depends on just how ridiculous the randomizer gets.
