Oy, my head. This is the last of the first-round face-offs; all future pairings will be determined by You, the Voter (cue the self-important Civic Duty music). Tomorrow, I'll run a blitz poll to handle the numerous ties that have cropped up along the way, as well as a revised pairing for the screw-up in yesterday's poll; after that, there will likely be an extended hiatus, as I'll be chasing my kids for the next few weeks. (I really must apologize here for some of the miserable choices on this list; I'm realizing in hindsight that there are a bunch of names that I could have easily excised, and a bunch I could have easily included. Ahh, well, water over the dam now.)

You know the drill by now: choose the director in each pairing you prefer, by whatever criteria you wish; there are two separate polls, so be certain to click both Submit buttons. Deadline for this round is Firday, April 18 at 1 p.m.; if you didn't vote on yesterday's travesty, you have until one this afternoon. This poll is closed; all votes have been recorded. Thank you all again for your participation!

Lang/Premminger has to be the most painful first-round matchup yet.

Blue D, on the other hand, contained my easiest set of votes to date. Only Craven/Coppola made me blink (and after the crapfest that was Marie Antoinette, I'm not giving her a vote based solely on two solid movies, when Craven has given us a fucking Ingmar Bergman remake, some amazing horror flicks, and solid movies in four different decades.

Obligatory reminders: Condon did NOT direct Chicago (although he did do Dreamgirls). Mankiewicz directed Sleuth, and Ross directed The Last of Sheila, two movies that belong together.

I had to dig through IMDb to find out who Lang/Premminger even were. I went with Premminger because of Porgy and Bess.

Took some ponderin', Blue D-8 did: I like both Kevin Smith and John Singleton, and I also know that they have pretty significant limitations. But they both seem to know what they do well -- Singleton can be a solid B-movie director, Smith knows the relationships-and-joking thing he does.

I voted for Smith because I think he's been more consistently good, within his somewhat limited window. (Though I hope he makes Ranger Danger and stretches that way.)

Oh, and I'm kind of gladdened by the David O. Russell-Cecil B. DeMille contest. Both are holding their own! (As of six people responding...)

I voted for Smith for the same reason... even though Singleton made the best movie between the two of them (Boyz in the Hood), I feel Kevin Smith has been more consistently good...

and I think Smith is a better writer than director. whereas Boyz won the match for me.
