I got my ten-year service anniversary gift from work yesterday. As I think I'd mentioned earlier, they give you a small catalog full of gift choices, ranging from low-end electronics to jewelry to lunchoens out on the town. I went with the digital camera, my first ever, and although it's not a very good camera, it's absolutely free! All I need to run it are three AAA batteries (not included), a memory card (not included), and the enclosed software (not Mac compatible). Grr. Oh, well, we do have a better-than-decent Windows machine in the apartment now courtesy of [livejournal.com profile] issendai, so we can do the dirty work on that and transfer the materials back to the Internet machine on a flash drive (not included).

I really shouldn't complain, though, because it was a gift, albeit one from the company who makes me take those calls every day. Which brings me to the official Work Gripe du Jour:

Dear Mr. Caller Guy,

I know you're a busy man, but could you do me the courtesy of urinating after the call is over? Thank you.

Disdainfully,
Mr. Disgruntled Operator Guy

How long before you need to set up an even-more-NSFW filter?

Aren't you glad videophones never succeeded?

(Also, memory card readers for the Mac are pretty cheap, like five bucks.)

1) Not. Going. To happen.
2) *looks at webcam* Wha'dya mean, "never succeeded"?
3) That's a definite possibility! I'll see how this goes once I have the memory card; I might be able to patch in right from the camera itself.

If the camera shows up as a USB mass storage device, you shouldn't need any software; just plug it in and watch iPhoto launch. If not, then card readers are cheap.

I gave it a try; the camera recognized the Mac, but the Mac didn't acknowledge the camera. Then again, I'm still working off of what passed for internal memory, so I should try it again once I have a memory card. Thanks for the tip!

So, I got a SD Card you can have if you want it and your camera accepts them. It is very big, but hey, free.
