This has been an extraordinarily good couple of days, in a quiet soul-healing sort of way. Many reasons for this, and I'll be getting to those in other posts over the next few, but I wanted to get the big one out of the way:

The check for the New York Times puzzle came in. Already. Yes, I know I've been saying "a couple of months," but evidently they're more punctual than I'm accustomed to in such matters. Yes, it was a very nice check. Yes, I'm using the word "was," because, well, it's pretty much gone at this point. This is quite all right by me, in this case: some of that went toward current bills, a bit of it got set aside for a bill coming up in a few weeks, and the rest....

Okay, you know all that whining I've been doing about the miserable Paleozoic iMac I've been using to carve e-runes onto the Interwebs with no hope of running anything current or interesting? Whining stops now. New Macbook is on the way. *confetti!* *streamers!* *those little noisemaker-things!*

It's a refurb, bought directly from Apple (which gets me a warranty and the comfort of not having to do the ol' Craig's List crap shoot); it was a wee bit more expensive than I was originally wanting to spend, but it was a damned good deal, and in the end it was worth it to have a machine that I can use comfortably for longer than a year or two. Small-ish monitor, enough memory to rock the house, the very latest system software, built-in apps that I actually need and can use, free shipping, glory be....

And it's shiiiiiny. Ye gods, I'm drooling just typing this entry.

It hasn't gotten here yet; looking at early next week, most likely. It's hard reconciling this with my dread fear of spending money on myself, but honestly, this has been a necessary purchase for a very, very long time; the current system is borderline unusable as it stands, and there's no way to improve the situation without the cash outlay I just made. I'm already listing in my head the things I'll be able to do that I can't do with the current Mac-beastie:
* run OS 10.X, where X > something pathetically small
* play decent online games without atrocious video-stuttering
* watch DVDs in the other room
* Movies on demand from Netflix
* webcam! webcam! webcam!
* use Facebook again, for what that's worth
* working on the novel at, say, Panera
* discover what colors actually look like (the monitor on this one's permanently quasi-pink)
* run my iPod again
* feel like a contributing member of society

(Is it early next week yet? No? *sigh*)
