A day late, a dollar short...

This week's RaveTen

Books: Near the top of my short list of utterly essential, utterly cool reference works is the seminal Dictionary of Superstitions, compiled by Iona Opie and Moira Tatem. Not just a listing of funky beliefs, the book presents nothing less than a comprehensive history of British Isles folklore, presenting countless interesting former beliefs from Roman times to the present day in their original scientific & literary contexts. You have to have this, if only to learn exactly why anyone would want to lick a frog's eyeballs.

Movies: It's not much of a secret that I have a serious Terry Gilliam fetish, so it's pretty much a given that I love the Classics, like Brazil and 12 Monkeys. But truthfully, the Gilliam film that succeeded in completely blowing me away was The Adventures of Baron Munchausen. At the time it was produced, it was one of the most expensive films ever made, and it lost nearly all of it, but every penny shows up on that screen. I can't think of a single movie that's as visually stunning; it's the only film I've ever seen in a theatre that has made the audience around me gasp out loud from the sheer beauty of it, at the moment when the light comes up on the ship, and it's sailing across silver sand...

Music: A lot of you are probably already aware of anti-folkster Ani Difranco. For those who aren't, in the last 12 years she has recorded countless interesting, imperfect albums, and one perfect one: Not a Pretty Girl, recorded whlie she was on the balancing point between her early acoustic rage and her later edgy experiments in electricity and brass, between cult status and true fame. When I first bought it, it stayed in my CD player for two months solid; right now, seven years later, it's in my car, and it gets played. Enough said

TV: Every kid's show known to man gets caled "magical" by the advertising monkeys, and in every case the advertising monkeys are wrong. With one exception: Maurice Sendak's "Little Bear" on Nickelodeon and Noggin. It's nothing less than the perfect childhood you wish for your child. It's nothing less than the perfect childhood you wish for yourself.

Web Sites: There are a lot of ideas I wish were mine. One such idea: Found Magazine. All it is is a collection of stuff people have found on the street. It's that simple, and that fascinating. (My favorite is the "Notes" section, but that's just me.)

Food: So I went into a Glens Falls winery, and asked the owner to point me towards the New York wines. I was told that they didn't carry them because "there wasn't much call for them" because New York wines are "too grapey." I don't go there any more. Any place that doesn't carry Bully Hill Love My Goat Red doesn't deserve my money, dammit.

LiveJournals: The only reason [livejournal.com profile] shadesong hasn't shown up in the RaveTen yet is, well, doesn't the whole wide world know who she is already? No? Oh, well then, you need to know her. I have met some of the most wonderful people through her pages, and learned much I need to know through her words and her experiences. My life is better for her friendship.

Shopping: You're a progressive. A radical. You need T-shirts, bumper stickers, buttons, posters, whatever. You need Northern Sun. End of story. (I prefer the print catalog, but the Web site here is more environment-friendly.)

Places: When [livejournal.com profile] vaclav2 and Amy got married, they had their photos taken in The Shakespeare Garden of Evanston, IL, a project based entirely around plants mentioned in the Bard's written works. I walked in, and didn't ever want to leave. I still don't. Photos are here, but the do no justice. You have to go.

Whatever: I general, I believe greeting card marketers are doomed to the same corner of Hell reserved for funeral directors. But Hallmark had to go and put out their Fresh Ink line, or as I like to call it Cards for the People I Hang Out With. They're little, square, quirky, charming... I am now unable to buy anything else for the people I love. The Birthday Hug Monkey is coming. Do not resist the Birthday Hug Monkey.

I think I'm going to move the RaveTen to Tuesday permanently, actually. More time, and all that. *nods*

1) I adore that Wild Colonials album.

2) I also love Found Magazine. I subscribe to the paper version. And that's how I found Dr. Evermor. Which was a great day.

3) New York wines aren't too grapey unless you're drinking the ones made with, like, Concord grapes. If you've got half a brain, you know to stay away from anything that's going to taste like Manischevitz. Dammit. The liquor store I usually go to has 10% off New York wines on Mondays. I keep meaning to take advantage.

4) I also love the birthday hug monkey card. Like, I would wear it as a t-shirt.

The saying, not the card.

Well, maybe the card. Or two of the card.

1) I do, too, even though the lyrics are occasionally a bit clunky.

2) Oooo...

3) And you're in a great area to get NY wines, too, being close enough to the Finger Lakes. (Have you tried Wagner Vineyards' Alta B? Way happy, especially with a good Vermont cheddar.)

4) Thank you so much for that mental image...

What a trip that you do this. I didn't realize. I'll look forward to it now. You should get paid for that service!

Hmm, you may have a point there...
but I think you could have a potential gig here!
