So anyway, I had this hankering to listen to Joan Osborne's Relish, or at least a few selected tracks thereof, so I grabbed Kristi's copy and popped it in. And while I listened, I thumbed through the liner notes, largely because I was curious as to whether "Right Hand Man" is an original. Turns out it is, although she wrote it with a team of about four others, which is par for the course.

So my eyes were scanning over the list of songwriter's names on the track (Eric Bazillian of the Hooters, etc. etc.) when I locked on the last name on the list: "D. van Vliet."

[pause]

What the ferk is Captain Beefheart's name doing on a Joan Osborne CD in any capacity?

I sincerely hope we have some Advil somewhere, because it's going to be a long day at work if we don't.

Are there Beefheartian samples on the song? Or significant instrumental portions?

No samples (she credits those separately where applicable). As for Beefheart licks, it is a rather bluesy number, but it seems much more straightforward-mainstream than his stuff. Not that I'm even remotely an expert...

I'm not too familiar with Joan Osbourne (though I think "What if God..." comes to mind?), but I recall Captain Beefheart being rather diverse in his songwriting. And maybe he's branching out a bit in his old age?

Actually, he retired from music entirely in 1982 or so, to devote attention to his painting. That's the main reason I'm so confused.

Aah, ok. But 20+ years is a good long break, maybe he just realized it was time to put to use some of the songs he'd been writing (I'm sure he didn't stop writing music for 20 years), or he needed more money in life, or...he had a special place in his heart for Joan Osbourne for some reason? =)
