Young romance, such as it is

I got sleep last night. Gods, the world looks better now.
I'm not sure how yesterday's conversation with the kids turned to crushes, but it was one of those moments when the fundamental differences between Boy-Child and Girl-Child's methods of operation come into clear focus. Nik keeps his flutterings close to his chest, so much so that I had to ask him if he even had any crushes. (He did mention a certain Chloe, who is, if the stories are any indication, manifestly unworthy of him.) I shared a memory of carrying him as a one-year-old through a supermarket and watching him gaze at a girl of similar age and sigh wistfully; he responded, "I bet I know what I was thinking: 'She understands my pain.'"
Abbey, on the other hand, lets it all hang out, in classic angst ridden poetry and cookie dough ice cream straight from the tub tradition. Seriously, her heart is a perpetual doodle on the back of a spiral notebook waiting to happen. She's currently dealing with a purported boyfriend named Hernan, who neglected to come by and hang out when he totally promised he would, which makes him a total backstabbing jerk, even though he's still really cute. I reminisced aloud about her young love for an Elvis impersonator, which she remembered better than I thought she would. She in turn shared her Standard Plan for dealing with crushes: "Day One: don't tell. Day Two: don't tell. Day Three: tell. Day Four: cry it off." That's my girl.
This morning, Abbey announced that her new career plan is to open a "cute café," which would have an all-female staff, for which she will design the uniforms. Her concept sketches heavily favor "Lolita sailor dresses with cute aprons." Um, yeah. At least she'd have a dedicated clientele.

Date: 2011-04-22 03:13 pm (UTC)And your boy-child sounds as romantically soulfully angstful as our 14yo here, though the latter matches your girl-child in wearing it all out on his sleeve as well ;-)

Date: 2011-04-22 10:51 pm (UTC)That's about right, at least from what I remember of my very, very, VERY sporadic girlygirl moments between the ages of 11 and 16.
Strange bit of synchronicity while wandering the Internet today for work-related purposes... I just found out that my very first high school crush is now deceased. He done stomped on my heart and squashed that sucker flat but good, back in the day. Not that I wished him dead, but Abby better watch out what she says about Herman [evil grin].
