My father, my stepmother and my stepbrother are all flying into Boston tomorrow for a week's visit. It's the first drop-in I've had from the Chicago relatives, and I've been peppered for suggestions of "things to do." I've already given them the obvious stuff like the Freedom Trail and the aquarium and Harvard Square, they've already made noises about going to Cape Cod at some point, there'll be some hanging-out time with the grandkids, and I just found out about this street market thing at Union Square on Saturday night. That's an excellent start, but I'd like to have some more non-über-touristy things up my sleeve for those in-between times. Any ideas?

My favorite place to show out-of-towners

I'm personally partial to the Boston Museum of Science. Hmm... it's the wrong time of year to pick apples, but some orchards might have walking tours. Oh, local small-batch ice cream, like from Christina's or JPLicks - we are the ice cream capital of the world, after all.

Castle Island should be less crowded during the week, and it's a decent little walk-around. You need a car to get there but it can be fun.

There's supposed to be a Shakespeare Slam at the Burren on Sunday the 7th. If I didn't have to herd redheads at the time I would be there in a heartbeat.

Oh, if they like to cook? Bring them to Penzeys in Arlington and/or Chrstina's spice shop in Cambridge. Christina's is smaller but has a better salts collection, plus it has the ice cream shop next door.
