Personal archaeology
Nov. 9th, 2003 09:29 amSo yesterday, Kristi and I spent several hours tidying up the storage shed in the back yard, which is crammed with all of the detritus of our (as opposed to her parents') lives that we haven't managed to fit in the house anywhere. The process basically involved hauling everything out onto the lawn, and sorting it among three piles: Keep, Donate, and Get This the Hell Off My Property. Pile #1 went back in the shed, except for a few things of the "Omigod, so that's where that went!" variety, which got snapped up either by Kristi or myself. Pile #2, mostly outgrown children's clothes and outmoded toys, got loaded into the Honda Minivan o' Love and carted down to the Salvation Army. Pile #3 is sitting under a tarp on the lawn, until such time as we can haul it to the dump; it's a bigger pile than we'd like, because apparently the local mouse population really likes the storage shed for its abundant and easily accessible bedding (note to selves: garbage bags are not suitable for shed storage any more).
Among the discoveries:
* Kristi's maternity wear
* a hand-knitted baby suit from my Omi
* two mouse skeletons
* my Russian mandolin, picked up for me on the St. Petersburg black market by
vaclav2 and Amy
* the glasses we toasted with at our wedding
* two swatches of fabric, bought just in case Kristi's wedding dress had to be expanded to accommodate her 7-months-pregnant body
* all of my old college notebooks, including a few with Lauren-writing inside
* plenty of other forgotten goodies, too numerous to mention
It was a good day. I didn't start feeling maudlin about it until much later. But a good day, nevertheless.
