Well, dammit, it looks like this is now an official capital-P Projekt. Might as well dive in.

As stated in this post, I am attempting to learn how to say, "I am a member of the Imperial Senate on a diplomatic mission to Alderaan," in as many languages as possible. So far, we have the following:

Afrikaans: Ek is 'n lid van die keiserlike senaat op 'n diplomatieke sending na Alderaan. (from [livejournal.com profile] belgatherial)

Anglo-Saxon: Ic eom Þegn caserlices gemotes ærendiende to Alderaane. (from [livejournal.com profile] highlyeccentric)

Can you help, either with new translations of with corrections to the above? New contributions will be added as they become available, with credit to the relevant posters. Thank you to all those who've already contributed! (Also, if you're of a mind to pimp this out, feel free. [livejournal.com profile] shadesong, if you mention it, I'll be deluged, which would be a good thing. A brain-mulching thing, but a good thing. EDIT: Thanks for the mention!)

Can't vouch for accuracy as they were bounced off ye olde translation widget:

Dutch: Ik ben een lid van de Keizersenaat op een diplomatieke opdracht aan Alderaan.

Portuguese: Eu sou um mebro do senate imperial em missao diplomatic a Alderaan.

Italian:Sono un membro del senato imperiale su una missione diplomatica a Alderaan.

Finnish: Olen Keisarillisen Senaatin jäsen diplomaattitehtävässä Alderaaniin.

I wonder about that German. "Imperialistisch" tends to sound to me more like "imperialistic" than "imperial". But my German is even poorer than my Swedish.

Well, the German comes to me directly from someone who was born & bred there ([livejournal.com profile] lennongirl), not just an expatriate or visitor who's fluent.

The difference could be dialectical, or colloquial...you know how native speakers have different ways of expressing things than how we're taught when we learn the language...

i think. I've never composed a full sentence before (only translated out of it). However, that should be readable to an anglo-saxonist.

The Dutch is not entirely correct: it would be better to say "Ik ben een lid van de Keizerlijke Senaat op diplomatieke missie naar Alderaan"

Also, for the French, the "à Alderaan" suggests it's already in Alderaan, so perhaps "vers Alderaan" is better.

If I'm remembering correctly, phonetically it's "khuee mar-ZHO-vuee," where "kh" is that coughing-up-phlegm sound, and "uee" is one vowel sound, like the French "oui".

If you do not currently own the International Dictionary of Obscenities, you really, really should.
