This entry stems from a conversation [livejournal.com profile] rafaela had over dinner the other night. Almost everyone, at one point or another, has played the old game of "if they were to make a movie based on your life, who would they hire to play you?" It's a fun one, but I wanted to take a different tack, so I ask of you the following:

If they were to make a movie based on your life, who would be the director?

[livejournal.com profile] rafaela came up with either Spike Jonze or Michel Gondry for herself, which surprised me until she explained that they were among the few directors out there who are good at capturing the internal monologue and the "stuff of thought." I went with Paul Thomas Anderson, largely because Robert Altman is no longer with us. Both of them focus(ed) on the complex social tangle we all live in, no matter what subset of society we live in—perfect for capturing the Grodian knot I always find myself in. From there, we tried doing our friends, but it proved difficult, and it rapidly devolved into jokes. ("How about [livejournal.com profile] yendi?" "*thinks* "Uwe Boll?" "He is so going kill you.")

So. Who would direct the movie of your life? Why?

(Adam, it was a joke. I swear.)

Fabulous question...

I think I'd have to go with Deepa Mehta because she can capture the absolute beauty of everyday life and is also great at looking at Indian culture through an outsider's perspective. Which works for me, because I think that she would have a really interesting take on my life both before and after marrying a desi, as well as be able to find the stunning beauty in the landscapes of all the places I've lived.

David Fincher. Because it's been incomprehensible, and sometimes a bit violent.

But I wish it was Gilliam.

Dear lord. My life makes little enough sense already.

I'm going to go with my first choice of Ang Lee.

Like I told you, I want somebody who can capture a strong female who is still fighting to figure herself out in a world that has trouble understanding where she's often coming from.

And he's shown he can capture the intricacies of interpersonal relationships, feelings of isolation, sweeping landscapes, close quarters...

I would love Michel Gondry. Hell, I would marry Michel Gondry. But I hope that David O. Russell could direct my life, I really do.

I want Tim Burton a la Big Fish. My life is filled with so much absolute absurdity that I think he'd do a good job. Barring that, I want you and Jason to direct it. I think that'd be hilarous.

OOoh! Roger Corman!

Er, or not.

How 'bout Madonna?!

*sigh*

Maybe I'll get them to collaborate...with Tarantino. It won't be an easy flick to watch, but it won't be dull.
